Libyan Rebels Fighting Gaddafi’s Army Over Control Of Brega
Muammar Gaddafi’s forces are said to be fighting Libyan rebels in residential areas of the eastern town of Brega. Rebel forces are said to have been advancing on Brega for the past several days despite heavy artillery fire from government troops defending the town. Sacking the town of Brega would be a major breakthrough for rebel forces because the town is home to one of Libya’s biggest oil facilities.
The city of Brega is about 750km (465 miles) east of the capital Tripoli, and the town has changed hands several times in the fighting along Libya’s Mediterranean coast since the rebellion began in February. An official from the rebel National Transitional Council, told Reuters news agency by telephone “The news coming from there is there is a street war going on between Gaddafi troops and the rebels, and 127 are wounded from our side.”
Col Muammar Gaddafi has refused to step down from his role as dictator. On saturday he gave a speech where he labeled the rebels traitors to the country, and said he has no plans on leaving his country.

Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi[4][5][variations] (born 7 June 1942) is a Libyan revolutionary and the country’s head of state from 1969 to the present day. Gaddafi became head of state after removing King Idris from power in a 1969 bloodless coup, after which he established the Libyan Arab Republic.[6] His almost 42 years in power make him one of the longest-serving non-royal rulersin history.[7] Gaddafi incorporated Arab socialist and Arab nationalist ideas into his political philosophy, which he published in The Green Book in 1975. In 1979 he relinquished the title of prime minister and was thereafter called the “Brother Leader and Guide of the Revolution”.[8][9]
