Cash Strapped Italy Spends 10 Million Euros On Private Health Care For Politicians
Although Italy is on the brink of bankruptcy, the politicians are still taking advantage on the system. In the last year Italy has spent 10 million euros (14 million U.S. dollars) on private healthcare for its politicians. These shocking figures – enough to completely remodel a hospital – were published at the same time as measures were being introduced by the very same politicians to save 48 billion euro (67.32 billion U.S. dollars) from the budget. Italy, which has the third largest economy in the euro zone, has also seen spending slashed in local government, freezes on pay and pension and fuel hikes. There has been increasing anger that the country’s privileged politicians, who on average earn £140,000 a year – double that of a American politician – are unaffected by these changes.
The numbers show that on average 30,000 euro (42,182 thousand U.S. dollars) a day was spent last year on the health care of the country’s 630 MPs and 315 Senators – with one of the largest costs being dentistry at an astonishing 3 million euro (4,217,629 million U.S. dollars). The spending was not just limited to politicians, as their immediate families – as well as ex spouses – are also entitled to government money.
The figures were more painful because health care in Italy has been hit by a series of scandals in recent years including claims of poor equipment and filthy wards as well as medical blunders. Many people are up in arms because they can barely pay for a visit tot the hospital, while the greedy politicians are allowed to charge the people for their hospital visits.
