10 Dead After Protests In Malawi

President Bingu wa Mutharika of Malawi has a lot of blood on his hands. After two days of protests at least 10 people are feared dead in unprecedented levels of unrest in this southern African nation. The president released a statement saying “It is wrong to go in the streets and demonstrate, instead let us dialog and work out a solution for these problems,” in a speech broadcast on the state-owned Malawi Broadcasting Corp. Mutharika ignored a list of demands from the head of the protesters and warned them that the government will act against the leaders of the demonstrations if there is any looting or vandalism. It is reported that the police fired tear gas to disperse tens of thousands of demonstrators in the African nation’s commercial capital, Blantyre, yesterday. Ten people died during fights with police in Mzuzu, the third biggest city, located in the northern region of the country, the spokesman for the health ministry, Henry Chimbali, said by phone. It was also reported that protesters burned tires and looted shops in the capital, Lilongwe, today, the independent MIJ FM reported. Reuters has now reported that the death toll has risen to 18, citing a later interview with Chimbali.

The Institute of Policy Interaction, the Malawi Law Society and the Council of Churches, and opposition parties organized protests against state laws and policies and a continuing shortage of fuel and foreign money.
