5 Essential Gadgets For The Modern Man
2012 is just around the corner. We still don’t have hoverboards, our houses aren’t manned by robots and fortunately we have not gone to war with aliens. Swings and roundabouts, really. However, the modern man has changed. Significantly. We’re a whole new species than what we were 50 years ago. Only about 2% of us look cool smoking. The majority of us are still uncertain as to how we are meant to talk to women and some of us, even watch TV soaps. But hey, that’s part of the transitional stage and learning process. Part of the masterplan. There is one area however, in which we have all excelled. A way in which we’ve made our mark on the world in the form of stupendous carbon footprint. Technology. We’ve changed the way in which we all live, communicate and work through some truly incredible inventions and advances. The best thing is, not only are many of these gadgets and gizmos practical, they make us look brilliant. They give us an excuse to leave the toolboxes under the sink. So sure, we might not be able to put up a shelf. We aren’t really that interested in wiring a plug and we’ve come to terms with the fact we can’t all make fire from two twigs. But we prove our worth in our ability to create mind blowing applications and aluminium cased devices which power our everyday lives. Below are some of the essential every day gadgets which every modern man should make a priority to own.
1: A Smart Phone
Okay, so by ‘smart phone’ I’m being exceptionally kind to HTC, Samsung, Blackberry and the rest of them. We all know that when it comes to smart phones, the iPhone is the front runner. Everything about the iPhone is right. The way it looks, what it does, its processing power, its adaptability, its vision. Every man should look at the iPhone, take note and apply that very innovation into his own life. The smart phone allows us to multi-task, fitting more into our day. For the ambitious type, it allows more time in the day to simply get things done. It helps keep us organised and we can switch from financial district businessman to Shoreditch DJ in an instant. Quite simply, a smart man uses a smart phone. We love you Mr Jobs.
Be mobile.
2: A Digital SLR Camera
Take note, not just a digital camera, but a digital SLR camera. There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, there is something very masculine about knowing about photography. You can use photography talk to reveal, very subtly, your more flamboyant, creative side without coming across as an arrogant extravert. Everybody needs or wants to know a photographer so this can be a great way of networking and offering your services. High quality digital SLR cameras provide far better picture quality than your standard digital camera and are packed with those few extras which will help set you apart from the generic ‘Facebook uploader’. Being the photographer at key social events such as parties, gigs and other events also help you play an important sociable role without the need for small talk.
Be flash.
3: A Good Quality Pair Of Headphones
We’re not talking about pretty coloured headphones. Or those wimpy whites you get with your iPod. A man needs quality headphones for two reasons. One reason is in order to listen to music of the very best quality. As arguably quality decreases as we all listen to music in mp3 format, the last thing we need is for all that bass and gritty guitar to be diluted down even further. We want to hear every little detail in order to enjoy music at its enthralling best. Secondly, good quality headphones are a status symbol. Whether we are wearing our dr dre headphones during a morning run, or our hd Sennheiser headphones on a morning commute, wearing high quality headphones allows us to show our more casual side, but equally highlights to people that we only settle for the premium best.
Be heard.
4: An Xbox 360
Unfortunately a Nintendo Wii is just a little too nice. A Playstation 3 is a little too ‘look at me’. An Xbox 360 is the happy medium. Men need games consoles. It’s a form of escapism. Nothing is more fun and sociable than being the host of a Fifa party. Ladies, may not understand, that’s the beauty of it. There are certain things in life that men and women don’t need to understand about each other, gaming is one of them. You don’t need to be a hardcore gamer, owning an Xbox is more about having the opportunity for some you time. Then when you’re in the mood you can blow up aliens, pretend you’re Wayne Rooney or act like a ninja. All without embarrassment.
Be relaxed.
5: An Electric Shaver
If you’re still going through that traumatic process of causing razor burn, excessive bleeding and ripping your face to shreds all in an attempt to look at your baby-faced assassin best, well you need to ditch that old hat manual razor. Purchasing an electric razor first and foremost makes financial sense. You can buy a high quality razor for under £150.00 which will last at least two years, Whereas most men will pay that per year for a high quality manual razor. Electric shavers are convenient too, and you don’t have to worry about leaving all that marshmallowy type mess that shaving foam always leaves behind. Best of all though, they give you a smoother, closer all round shave. If that’s what we’re aiming for, why should we accept anything less?
Be smooth.
