Car Maintenance Tips for Winter

You should start preparing your car for winter long before temperatures drop and winter storms start to roll in. The belts should not be cracked, loose or show any kinds of wear. If they do, they should be replaced immediately. You should also check over all of your fluid levels, especially your antifreeze. You should carry extra antifreeze, brake fluid, power steering fluid and windshield wiper fluid that is designed for winter in your trunk.

Your tires also need extra care. Check them over for the proper tread depth, ensure that they are aired up correctly and have them rotated and balanced. It is a good idea to carry a tire gauge in your car to check the air pressure periodically. If you do install snow tires on your car, have a professional mechanic do it for you. It is also smart to carry a pair of tire chains in your trunk as well. The tire chains should be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Your trunk should have a set of emergency supplies to help you in the event you get stuck or are stranded in bad weather. It should include items such as: a first aid kit, blankets and cold weather clothing for everyone your family, a snow shovel, flashlight and extra batteries, a weather radio and rock salt. You should also always carry a fully charged cell phone in your vehicle to contact help if needed. You should also have a quality ice scraper, pair of jumper cables and gas treatment to help get your engine running. Winter clothing can include extra coats, gloves, insulated coveralls and boots, depending on your needs.
