Shelby GT Fords New Mustang
The Ford Motor Company has announced that 2013 will be a very special year for its flagship Mustang sports cars. When the 2013 Shelby GT500 Mustang rolls out of the assembly line, it will be capable of reaching 200 mph.
The iconic Shelby Mustangs are some of the most recognizable high performance American muscle cars. Shelby Mustangs were originally produced during the Golden Age of the Ford Mustang, from 1965 to 1970. The early Shelby Mustangs are highly prized by the automotive community, and until 2007 most Ford enthusiasts assumed that Shelby Mustangs were to remain legendary relics of a bygone era.
When Ford introduced the fifth-generation Mustangs in 2005, fans of the American classic were delighted to see a styling clearly influenced by early Shelby Mustangs. In 2007 Ford made an announcement that would bring joy to die-hard Mustang fans: an updated version of the famed original 1968 California Special Mustang would be produced by Shelby, as well as a new Shelby GT500. Shelby’s return to the Mustang world was very well-received, and it seemed to have inspired Ford to come up with more special Mustangs, such as the 2008 Bullitt, the 2009 GT 45th Anniversary Edition, and the 2011 GT500 and California Specials.
The 2012 Shelby GT500 has various improvements over the 2011 model. Ford has wanted to take the lead in the American pony muscle car category for some time, something that the 2012 Shelby Mustang squarely achieves. Not only does the 2012 GT500 leave the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Charger in the dust, it also features enough retro-styling to make it a worthy member of the venerable Shelby stable. The 550 horsepower V8 engine packs a healthy amount of punch, and the fact that the Shelby GT500 only comes with rear-wheel drive and manual transmission gives it a lot of old-school character.
While the 2012 Shelby Mustang comes with an electronic limitation that keeps speeds at 155 mph and lower, the 2013 GT500 will not have such restrictions. In 2013 drivers can expect an ultra-potent eight-cylinder engine that will deliver 650 horsepower.
The high price tags for the 2012 Shelby Mustangs will be expected in 2013. Shelby drivers should not expect fuel economies greater than 23 mpg in the highway. In terms of safety, Shelby Mustangs usually receive good crash ratings, but the lack of a spare tire in lieu of an emergency inflation kit is a bit unnerving.
