Student Tips for a Cheaper Night Out

So, you’re a university student. This probably means that you spend most of your time studying, and may work part time for some extra cash. Then, of course, when you aren’t working or studying you might be hanging out with your friends, watching a game, or dancing the night away at a club.

The years you spend in university can be quite a difficult time for your bank account:you’re not yet completely financially independent (Thanks Mom and Dad!), but independent enough to take some fiscal responsibility. Many people may not realize this at such a young age, but we end up spending a lot of money on useless things when we’re in university, especially when we go out. If we could save just a little of that money then we wouldn’t be as likely to be broke when we finally graduate and have to find our way in the real world. After all, it would be nice to have a little financial cushion once you enter full blown adulthood.

I won’t tell you to completely change your lifestyle and stop going out. You work hard in school, so you’re entitled to relax and let your hair down when you get a chance. I’m merely suggesting that you make a few minor adjustments when you paint the town red…

Don’t run up a massive bar tab

Besides the fact that being an intoxicated idiot is not remotely attractive, alcohol is expensive. Really expensive. Depending on where you go, a simple mixed drink like a Long Island Iced Tea could cost you upwards of $10, especially in the city. Make your wallet happy and cut back on the drinks. This doesn’t mean you have to stop drinking completely (though your wallet would greatly appreciate it), just reduce your tab by one or 2.

You can also do some research and find drinks specials around town. Bar chains will sometimes do “two for ones” and local clubs may hold special promotional price nights. Often you can find cheaper drinks and a good time this way, especially if there is a group of you.

Split the price of petrol

Not all university students have a car, which means you may already be engaging in the environmentally and fiscally friendly habit of carpooling. Take it a step further and split the cost of petrol evenly. That way, no one gets stuck with a huge bill and it’s fair. You can even go one better by finding bars within walking distance for your residence. No need to pay for petrol, and no need to fight over who will be a designated driver.

If you are a driver and often give your friends a ride, don’t let it leave you out of pocket too often. A little cash from your passengers can go a long way to cover the costs of fuel, maintenance and car insurance premiums.

Split the cost of food and order from the appetizers

The cost of food is on the rise, as is just about everything else. Do yourselves a favor and split the cost of food. Some bars and restaurants offer huge appetizer plates, so split an order of nachos pr other snacks with your friends. This should be more than enough to keep you satisfied on your night out.

Go to a friend’s place instead

A night out doesn’t have to include bars and clubs. A simple party at your friend’s place is more than sufficient to socialize and have some much needed fun. This is also way cheaper than going to a bar.

You’re only young once, so live it up to the fullest. Just make sure your wallet doesn’t suffer.
