Located in the Canadian Rockies, this rural resort sits close to Kootenay National Park and offers skiing on 50kms of beginner and expert trails, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, rafting and fishing in the beautiful Kootenay River. As for being eco friendly, they are tops, generating all its electricity through wind, micro-hydro and solar power. The heat and hot water is provided from the dead wood gathered from the nearby forest and put in a central boiler system that distributes heat and hot water to all seven of the resort’s log cabins and the main lodge, which accommodates 13 guests — each residence has full-equipped kitchens.
2. Hotel Terra, Jackson Hole, USA
Hotel Terra is as green as they get! Located in gorgeous Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the resort covers guests with 100% recycled roof shingles, uses tons of bamboo, crushed glass, stone and marble for building material and the visitors pad around on totally organic carpets. All of its electricity is produced from wind, solar and micro-hydro power, so eco friendly is an understatement. The rooms have large picture windows for breathtaking mountain views, and the hotel boasts an infinity pool, hot tub and rooftop spa.
3. Monte Rosa Mountain Refuge, Zermatt, Switzerland
The Monte Rosa Mountain Refuge sounds rustic but is in fact quite futuristic in appearance. Located under the Matterhorn, it affords beautiful views of three glaciers — the Mount Rose, Grenz and Gorner. The building is silver metallic with sharp angular architecture and sleeps up to 120 visitors, whether they’re campers, hikers or mountain climbers. It’s designed to pull 90% of its power from the sun and is built from local wood. This lodge is perfect for experienced skiers, mountaineers and hikers, so there is no pampering — just outdoorsy fun.
4. Chic Choc Mountain Lodge, Quebec, Canada
Located in the expansive Matane Wildlife reserve, the Chic Choc Mountain Lodge in Quebec is out of the way and can only be reached via snowcat in winter and is known as a “ski-in ski-out” mountain hideaway. The remote lodge has 18 rooms and offers guests a sauna, outdoor spa and a log fire lounge for relaxation after a long day on the slopes. It’s heavily insulated for energy saving and draws power from wind, micro-hydro and solar power.
