Are you too “Hip” for your Glasses?
Being alternative or “indie” has been never been quite so popular. The ironic faux vintage t-shirts, plaid, 80s throw backs, vintage or retro tech, beat up converse all stars, tattoos and completely over the top “I don’t care how I look” look has evolved since the early 2000s from the roots of emo and geekdom to be a class all by itself. And it turns out this look and attitude is rather infectious.
With this trend that became known as “hipster”, glasses have risen to inexplicable popularity. In no time at all thick framed glasses went from “likely to get you beat up” to “likely to get you a date”.
Do you want to be a hipster and you’d like to complete the look with a great pair of thick framed hipster glasses? Here’s a few helpful hints:
1. 20/20 Vision?
No worries. If you’re a hipster, you don’t even need prescription glasses. You can get your hands on a pair of Buddy Holly-esque frames with. Some people in the great city of Hong Kong have even decided to opt for glass-less frames. They say this means their lashes don’t have to hit the lenses, and they don’t have to deal with dirty lenses and frames fogging up at the first sign of temperature change. Fashionable and practical!
2. Want those 80s Sunglasses that are so popular these days? But don’t have 20/20 vision?
Again, you don’t have to worry too much here. You can buy prescription sunglasses in pretty much any frame you like. Although those trademark hipster shade glasses might not work too well for correcting your sight.
3. What are the most popular glasses for hipster these days?
There are many options from very high market (and high price) to trendy fashion icons like Gok Wan’s new glasses frames to Roxy, Calvin Klein, and Oakley prescription glasses are definitely up there for the people’s designers. But thick framed styles in general (darker colours are better) make the cut. Think of those dorky thick-framed glasses kids got beat up for in the 80s, then find an updated design (although those actual glasses could work too if you want to stick with vintage). Harry Potter glasses would work too.
The key to hipster glasses is remembering it’s all about being fashionable, in an ironic sort of way. Don’t take yourself too seriously and whatever you do don’t let anyone know you tried to look this hip.
Guest Post: K Newey is a copywriter and not a hipster, though despite some distaste she has heard expressed toward hipsters she actually likes the style. Unfortunately many 20 something hipsters do not have lots of spare cash to pull off their look, but SelectSpecs offers more affordable options if you’re wallet is feeling a little hollow.
