Winter Skin Care Guide
Cold winter temperatures can can cause havoc on your skin. Along with winter weather comes low humidity and dry air – couple these two factors with interior heating and lack of hydration and you have the perfect recipe for dull, dry, cracked skin that can rob your complexion and entire body of vital moisture and nutrients your skin needs to survive the winter months ahead. This simple winter skin care guide is easy to follow and will provide valuable insight as well as tips for using the correct skin care products for your skin type.
The most common signs of stressed skin are excessive redness, flaking, peeling, cracking and sensitivity. The good news is that these changes within your skin are normal for this time of year and can be dealt with easily. The trick is not to ignore them. If left untreated you could be heading for a more serious condition called winter dermatitis which may cause itchy and inflamed skin and may lead to open sores and in some severe cases, bleeding of cracked heals and hands.
Winter Skin Care Tips
1. Hot, long showers and baths might feel wonderful – but honestly, they are stripping your skin of precious natural moisture. Water temperatures should be warm, and bathing time should be shorter.
2. Avoid using harsh soaps that rob your skin of essential oil. Try using a natural body wash that is sulfate free. Pat wet skin dry, never rub harshly with a towel.Leave your skin damp to the touch, allowing moisture to be absorbed back into your skin while applying an oil based body cream. Make sure to use a generous amount on feet, knees and elbows, as these are the areas that tend to dry out first. This important step will keep your entire body soft, supple and well moisturized.
3.Guard hands from direct exposure to winter elements. Always wear gloves while outdoors and keep a pair of gloves handy while doing household chores. Harsh cleaning chemicals, bleach and dish washing soap can dry your hands and make them look red and irritated. Keep a rich hand cream handy and apply before and after wearing gloves.* In extreme cases, apply a natural oil such as Vitamin E to hands and feet and wear a pair of “cotton” socks and gloves to bed. This will clear up any problems with dried, cracked hands and feet immediately.
4. If you are pregnant through the winter months, make sure to use a pregnancy stretch mark cream to avoid getting unsightly stretch marks. These marks occur when your skin is in it’s most weakened state. Loss of collagen and elastin can cause tender skin to rupture. Using the correct skin care that contains botanical oils while pregnant and post pregnancy is vital to keeping your skin healthy and well moisturized especially in cold weather.
5. Anti-aging skin care should be used at any age. Winter weather can cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear. Facial redness, (called Rosacea) can be aggravated by dry heat. Special facial serums are designed to attract moisture to parched, winter weary skin. Invest in skin care products that are designed to moisturize and protect your face and neck from extreme weather. This also goes for damaging sun rays that can still burn your skin while enjoying winter sports such as snow skiing. Make sure your facial moisturizer contains an SPF/UVB rating of at least 50.
6. Hydration is key to healthy, glowing skin in any season. Drink at least 60 to 100 fluid Oz’s of water each day. This is a bit harder to do in colder temperatures, as the average person tends to not feel as thirsty. Keeping a water bottle always handy will help.
This practical guide to good skin care will ensure your skin will survive another winter without looking a day older.
