Want to run Your Own Recording Studio?
If you’ve listened to some of the rubbish music that gets on the radio these days then you may well have thought…”I can do better”. Well now thanks to the fact that software has become more user-friendly and affordable and because there are loads of courses that will teach you all the skills needed, you can easily start your own recording studio. You really don’t need super expensive premises and a record company behind you. You just need the skills and some attitude, plus all of this stuff…
Mad Skills
Certainly the first and most important thing you need to do is to hone your craft. Assuming you have been to college or university and gained qualifications in music or sound engineering already, you then need to get as much experience as you possibly can by working for already existing studios or by renting one out. You need to build a reasonable reputation and some contacts so that when your own studio is ready, you have a better chance of getting work.
Space
The next thing you need to do is find a location. A recording space needs to be an officially approved ‘loud noise space’ which means that its far enough away from people that might care about noise and the police aren’t going to come round and tell you to turn the noise down. These might be in industrial estates, outside of town or somewhere where there is lots of space around the building so the noise doesn’t reach too far. Equally you need to be somewhere you are going to get as little outside noise coming in as possible as it will disrupt recording. So that cheap spot next to the railway line is not going to work…
Also, the space needs to be secure so that you aren’t worried about people trying to break in and steal all your gear.
Finally, your recording space needs to be as good for live recording as possible. This means it needs to be big enough for an orchestra or a large rock band, it should be light but with as few windows as possible and have a warm woody feel with no echo. You need a separate isolation room for vocals and a sound proof control room for you to work your magic.
Make a Name for Yourself
Once you’ve got all your gear in your new premises, the next most important thing is to get your name out there. Record some new artists and get a good reputation by doing excellent work. You also need to get on well with the band because word of mouth is extremely important for getting more work.
Business
Lastly, you need to remember that this is going to be a business so you need to think about insurance, health and safety, a business plan and all that boring stuff so that you don’t end up in debt and having to sell.
Good Luck!
