5 Of The World’s Fastest Road Bikes
Motorcycles are beastly machines, known for their performance as they knife through lanes like metal cheetahs. There are, however, some bikes that can reach speeds above and beyond all knowable barriers, yet still remain street legal. As casual riders and enthusiasts alike are wont to enjoy a bit of motorcycle porn, here are the 5 of the world’s fastest road bikes for your viewing pleasure:
5. Yamaha YZF-R1 – 186 mph (299 kph)

Yamaha may be known for its musical instruments and products, but if you ask anyone who knows motorcycles, the sweet sound gunning from a Yamaha YZF-R1 blows away any hipster’s keyboard. With a top speed of 186 mph (299 kph), the newest model of the popular Japanese motorcycle features a 998cc, 4 cylinder, 16 titanium intake valve, dual overhead cam (DOHC) liquid cooled engine. It can generate 95.6 kW or 128.2 brake horsepower (bhp) at 10,000 rpm. The Yamaha YZF-R1 has a 6 speed transmission with a multiplate slipper clutch.
4. Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird – 190 mph (306 kph)

Despite being discontinued in 2007, the Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird still ranks among the top motorcycles in terms of pure speed. Not even a decades worth of engineers, think tanks, and big ideas may be able to improve upon an engine and design that has speed bursting out of every mechanical orifice. The bike is loaded with a 1137cc, 4 cylinder, liquid cooled engine, which produces 153 horsepower, or 114 kW at 10,000 rpm.
3. Suzuki Hayabusa – 200 mph (321 kph)

Just as Google is to search, Apple is to tablets, and Coke is to carbonated stimulants, the name Hayabusa has been the gold standard for motorcycle speed. The original Suzuki Hayabusa was designed to compete with other top performance bikes and is capable of reaching speeds up to 200 mph (321 km/h). The newer models are electronically limited to 186 mph, however, running on a 1340cc, 16 valve, DOHC liquid cooled engine with Twin Swirl Combustion Chambers, but are rumored to be able to fly up to 248 mph when unlocked.
2. MTT Turbine Superbike Y2K – 230 mph (370 kph)

In common parlance, Y2K refers to a red herring, a doomsday scenario that never happened and is laughable in retrospect. The MTT Turbine Superbike Y2K, on the other hand, is no joke, the only smiles it induces from pure exhilaration and the G-force flapping back your cheeks. The superbike has a Rolls-Royce 250-C20 turboshaft engine with 320 horsepower at 52,000 rpm and a simple 2 speed automatic transmission.
1. Dodge Tomahawk – 350 mph (563 kph)

Perhaps the Dodge Tomahawk isn’t technically legal or even in production, but the concept car is too impressive not to include on any list of fast motorcycles. The futuristic look and wheel design resembles something Batman would ride if he were into chrome. The Tomahawk features a ridiculous top speed of 350 mph (563 kph) with an output of 500 hp at 5600 rpm and a manual 2 speed transmission. So far nine bikes have been sold for the hefty price of $555,000 a piece. Although Dodge stresses the bikes are designed to be rolling art pieces and not for riding, this can almost be construed as a tacit approval for bikers who consider the freeway to be a museum.
