Portland Trail Blazers Sign Free Agent Forward Craig Smith
Free agent forward Craig Smith gave fans an early Christmas present when he tweeted “Portland here I come …” before tweeting Marcus Camby that he was “on my way.” The 28 year-old from Boston College has played five seasons for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Clippers. His most successful statistical season came in 2008-09, when Smith averaged 10.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game with the Timberwolves.
Smith played the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 48 games last season. Details of the new deal have yet to be released, but will most likely feature a guarantee for this season. The Blazers will have to release a player before the start of the regular season in order to afford Smith’s new contract. Earl Barron is the most likely candidate to be released, although both he and Chris Johnson feature non-guaranteed contracts.
