5 Holiday Disasters Just Waiting to Happen…and How to Protect Yourself

With Christmas around the corner and relatives coming from all over it is so important to avoid any kind of common cliche catastrophes. While these make many holiday comedies amusing and entertaining, in real life we all know there is little to laugh about when these disasters strike at home. The holidays should be reserved for happy memories so be sure to take steps to avoid any dangers this season.

Some of the most common and dangerous ones can so easily be avoided with a few simple steps.

1. Avoid Guests Slipping Near Your Home
The easiest one to avoid is also the nicest you can do. Try to clear the walkway up to your house of snow. Throw down some salt! It only takes two seconds. No one wants to see grandma in the hospital on Christmas with a broken hip. Or little Jimmy with a sprained ankle!
2. Beware of Fire Hazards
Another way to common holiday disaster is the Christmas fire. No not the intentional one in the fireplace! Its the oh so common Christmas time fire disasters. This means cleaning up the wrapping paper immediately after gifts are opened. This can stop a fire from accidentally catching outside the fireplace. Also make sure to turn off Christmas lights at night time and to turn off space heaters. Also don’t leave candles unattended or near any hazards. If you haven’t done so yet, investing in contents insurance to be sure that your belongings can be replaced in the tragic event of a fire, is also a good idea.
3. Take Care When Alcohol is Involved
Another potential holiday disaster waiting to happen has to do with alcohol. This means doing a few things. One is making sure that it is up high enough so that the kids don’t get into it. Alcohol poisoning can be fatal for the little ones. Another is making sure that no one leaves the house after having one too many. Try to limit the amount. If that doesn’t work don’t let the said party leave. Have them take a nap or drink some coffee. Too many lives become at risk when someone drinks and drives.4. Avoid Sledding Accidents
Another holiday disaster to be aware of is sledding. Make sure your sled is working and durable. Be sure to bundle up when you go. Try to avoid any hills that look far too dangerous or have way too many trees. Over 35,000 sledding accidents are reported a year. Be smart and be safe.

5. Be Careful Hanging Those Lights!
Another holiday disaster to avoid is the disaster that come with making your house bright and cheery. That’s right, decorating the outside of the house! Try to make sure you do it during the daytime while its still not slippery out. Make sure someone is holding the ladder when you go up it! Also make sure to only use outdoor extension cords for the lights. If not the only chestnuts you’ll be roasting are your own! If you use the indoor extension cords you could get shocked or start a fire.

Happy Holidays, Be Careful, and Have Fun!!!!!
