Keeping Tabs on Your Kids Today

As technology takes over so many areas of our lives, it can be a big plus – or a huge negative – to making sure we don’t lose sight of our children’s whereabouts. This situation can run the gamut of annoying to downright dangerous, so read on for some ideas to make certain you are up to date with their world.

Household Blog

Create a blog, many are free, and make it mandatory as a way to stay in touch. Add fun photos to up the excitement level for your kids; add poems, quotations, anything to get them to express themselves – you’ll be surprised what insight this can give you into your child’s emotions and any problems they are dealing with. You can add polls, calendars for chores or fun outings for more interesting content and connection, which will encourage their participation!

Texting

Though most parents aren’t real fans of this form of “talking” to their kids, it is the way the children are communicating these days. Keep it short and sweet and they will respond. If they don’t, there is always the possibility of limiting their cell phone use. Think about prepaid phone cards for one main reason, saving you money. Many of them include unlimited times for an inexpensive monthly fee – but even more importantly, don’t require long term contracts, which can break your bank. Also, if you are unsatisfied with a service you can’t just quit without a hefty penalty fee.

Skype

When your kids, or you, are away from home – Skype can be an ideal way to connect. While a little voice on the other end can speak volumes, a “picture is still worth a thousand words.” Even cell phones now have capability to “photo-talk” so you can get a visual on them. As a parent, you can always pick up the subtleties that are missed by those terse little texts.

Staying in touch doesn’t have to be intrusive, there are so many ways you can show you care and love your kids – in ways that don’t stifle or smother them. Try some of these ideas to bring back the simplicity of home to your kids and watch how quickly they respond in positive ways.
