Reviewed: Stylish Skateboard Clothing & Footwear
Skateboard clothing is individual and should help you create unique style that not only looks good but suits your personal taste. It should be pretty loose, even if you choose a close fitting t-shirt, or at the very lease comfortable when you ride.
Plenty of brands put skate wear in the same category as surf wear, snow board clothing, BMX – simply put, its active wear that looks good as well as being suitable for fast moving sport activities.
Designers like Dephect, Addict, Zoo York and Ringspun offer some of the most uniquely designed clothing where Quicksilver, Vans and Animal have always had their portion of skateboard clothing covered. Even Adidas are on board with their collection of skatewear, but there are certain do’s and don’ts when selecting clothing that fits nicely and looks fab.
If you’re over a certain age then you probably don’t want to wear the same kind of outfit and footwear as someone a bit younger, but we think the following Do’s and Don’ts apply to most skaters:
Skateboarding – Clothing & Footwear Do’s & Don’ts
Belts
Firstly, whatever you wear its not nice for you or your spectators to have your jeans half way down your backside. Choose decent belts that mean you don’t have to keep pulling up your trousers – there’s nothing worse when you’re trying to skate and concentrate on tricks, whilst hiking your pants back over your bum.
Mummy shouldn’t have to help you with this one, belts are pretty easy to choose if you go to the write shop.
Money
Splurging on clothes that your mates are wearing doesn’t mean it looks good on you so don’t waste money on clothing and footwear that you find uncomfortable or doesn’t fit you well.
Spend time shopping properly and you will be pretty sure to pick stuff up that fit well, are comfortable enough for you to manoeuvre in, and that don’t hit your pocket too deeply – unless you’re making money from your skate, the chances are you’ll damage your outfit, especially at the beginner or trick stages.
Choose durable clothing that will last, high spec and good quality skateboard wear isn’t always expensive, but select carefully and you’ll find outfits that won’t need replacing for years.
Brands
Clashing colours is all pretty common this year, but clashing brands is a no no if all of your pieces are grafitti’d and smothered in brand names really shouldn’t happen.
If you like loud and arty, then choose just one statement piece of clothing to wear – don’t overdo it as you risk looking like a walking advertising board.
Try Ringspun hoodies teamed with Dephect tee’s but then keep everything else simple – plain coloured jeans keep the whole look together, but if you must have more design go for the design on your shoes that can be seen below your jeans when you Ollie or take out a 360 Flip.
Footwear
Buying a new board in itself can be pricey, but the clothing and footwear you opt for can be pretty inexpensive so long as you look at the alternative options available.
The main thing is to look for is distinctive footwear that is casual and comfy.
Think street footwear with a retro edge and you will get timeless shoes that will last an age. Vans and DC do some pretty hip footwear that sets your outfit apart and can help with your skateboard control.
