A Natural Dose of Sunshine

With winter droning on, many of us find ourselves a little on the blue side.  Unless you live in a very sunny state, the cold and gray weather can bring on bouts of depression and general grumpiness.  Add to that the exhaustion and let down from the holidays, and we can be downright cranky!

So what can we do to help give our mood a little boost? And I mean a natural, non-medicated boost.  Fortunately there are a ton of ways to feel happier that cost next to nothing and are completely healthy for our bodies and minds.

VITAMIN B

Foods that are rich in vitamin B often contain Tryptophan, which can be converted to Serotonin after ingesting.  Serotonin is directly linked to happiness.  Examples are eggs, beef, cheese and tofu.

VITAMIN D

Sunshine does a soul good.  Low on sun?  Take vitamin D (which is what the sunshine gives you).  Not only is it good for our heart, but it’s linked to helping with depression.  And most people are vitamin D deficient.

CHOCOLATE

Yum.  Hard to imagine something so tasty has health benefits.  But it does!  Research shows that chocolate contains phenyl ethylamine.  This is a chemical also in our brain that regulates our mood.  It’s also thought to boost serotonin as well.  Bring on the goodness!

FLAXSEED OIL

This oil derived from the flax plant, is rich in Omega-3’s.  It’s similar to fish oil but plant based and absolutely odorless.  Aside from the benefits to your heart, skin and cholesterol, it’s linked to regulating hormones and improving mood.  Just one gel cap a day will start you on the path to a perkier mood.

WATER

This might be really obvious but many people don’t drink enough water every day.  The recommended daily does is 64 ounces per day.  And drinking soda doesn’t count.  Keeping your body hydrated will improve your skin, get rid of headaches and help prevent fatigue.  These three things will result in a happier you.

EXERCISE
