John Edwards Heart Condition Delays Upcoming Trial
Former presidential candidate John Edwards has been stuck in a criminal corruption trial for a while now, and it looks like it could go on even longer. A source told CNN that Edwards trial will be delayed because of a life threatening heart condition, which could push the trial back for an undisclosed period of time. Edwards attorneys met with the federal judge on Friday afternoon in a North Carolina courtroom regarding his trial, and filed for a motion for delay.
Edwards trial date has now been pushed back to March 26 of this year, and could be pushed further back depending on whether his health improves or not. Judge Catherine Eagles said she has spoken to Edwards’ cardiologist, who recommended a postponement, because Edwards is set to undergo surgery next month. John will have to provide the court with a written medical update of his condition no later than February 28, according to court records.
Edwards has been charged with six felony and misdemeanor counts related to donations to and payments from his failed 2008 presidential campaign. He stands accused of conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws. He has denied any wrongdoing and has vowed to fight the charges for as long as it takes to clear his name.
