5 Tips for Writing Stellar Term Papers

Term papers can be frightening for many college students because they often account for a large portion of your grade. This is a time to take everything you’ve learned in the class and put it to use in your paper so that the professor knows that you understand the information. While you may be at a loss as to where to begin, here are a five tips for writing stellar term papers.

Start Early

It is so, so easy to procrastinate on term papers. After all, it’s only 800 – 1,000 words, right? While it may not take a long time to write, a term paper is more than just typing up a few hundred words. There are several steps that go into writing a top-notch term paper. First, you need to collect information, read the information, highlight useful information, create an outline, write a rough draft, proofread the paper and cut and add information as needed. In other words, you need to start ASAP.

Break the Work Down and Set Dates

Once you think of everything that needs to be done, it can be quite intimidating. The one-month deadline may seem closer than you originally thought. Relax. Instead of worrying about the deadline for the entire paper, break the work down and set dates for everything that needs to be done. This will help you fly through the process and still turn in a killer paper.

Spend Enough Time Researching and Outlining

Many students make the mistake of rushing through the researching and outlining steps or skip them altogether. Unfortunately, these are some of the most important steps in writing a good paper. You need to spend hours researching the material so that you come up with correct and insightful information for your paper. You also need to spend time outlining the paper so that your thoughts don’t become jumbled in the writing process.

Read and Reread

This cannot be stressed enough. You need to read your paper once it’s complete and reread it again. More importantly, you should reread the paper after you’ve had a break away from the writing process. This will give your mind time to clear so that you can catch the little mistakes. You may even want to have a friend or someone in the tutoring center of your college to read over the paper.

Cut the Fluff

Last, but certainly not least, when rereading your paper, you want to make sure it isn’t filled with unnecessary information. It can be tempting to load your paper down with fluff in order to meet a word limit, but it will cost you. Go back through your paper and cut any useless information. If your paper no longer meets the word limit, you may need to do more research.

Writing a great term paper isn’t that hard to do, but it does take time. Don’t let yourself be fooled into believing that all it takes is a couple hours to type up 800 words. There’s a lot more to writing a great research paper than just writing it.
