Wind Power Benefits The Global Good

Wind power is a form of energy that has always existed. In the earlier times it was directed towards usage in irrigation of crops and navigation of sailing boats. But the harnessing of wind power for the purpose of electricity generation is a recent phenomenon. Technological advancements have made it possible for mankind to tap this free source of energy and avoid other avenues whose consequences can cause havoc for the environment.

Wind blows from high pressure to low pressure areas. This is caused by the uneven heating of the earth’s atmosphere by the sun. This blowing of wind is tapped by windmills for energy generation. The basic principles of it are similar to those of turbines built for river dams. The propeller in the windmills when rotated generates electricity which is ‘clean’ and free from any harmful emissions. Wind farms that consist of many windmills are usually placed in areas where winds are a constant natural occurrence. These places of strong and steady winds are found throughout the world. But the best places are coastal regions, mountain tops and edges where wind velocity is increased naturally due to the geography.

In the recent years wind farms have sprang up in many areas of America and Europe. While wind power provides energy to houses in isolated parts of California, Scotland and Wales are also benefitting from this technology. Wind power is immensely beneficial and necessary in current times. Countries throughout the world have failed to adhere to emission levels proposed by Kyoto Protocol. In such as scenario there is a need for an alternative source of energy that will not disturb the ecological balance of the nature.

Wind power is a free source of energy which doesn’t need any fuel to produce energy. The only cost lies in setting up of the windmill and its maintenance. Unlike other alternatives, there is no wastage or emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Its benefits can be enjoyed by people even in the most remote areas of the world. But there are many people who believe that windmills are very unaesthetic and that they destroy the natural beauty of a place. These wind farms are also thought of as an expensive proposition because the kind of location they mostly occupy (coastal areas) are very costly. Wind power is also not a very consistent and predictable source of energy. Some days can give huge electricity production while others register no wind at all.

Despite a few reservations about the aesthetics and noise levels, wind power has spread across many parts of the world. United States is itself termed as ‘’Saudi Arabia of Wind Power’’ because of the immense potential it has in this field. Due the immense size and crucial geographical points, America is all set to dominate the world in electricity generation through wind power. Other countries are also not far behind. The work has already begun as countries such as Denmark, Germany and Spain have started to produce a substantial part of their energy from wind power. All eyes now rest on China which has, until now, focused more on solar energy than wind power.
