Oregon Ducks Football Head Coach Chip Kelly Turns Down Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coaching Offer
Before Sunday night, all signs pointed to Chip Kelly becoming a NFL head coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But at the very last second, Kelly had a change of heart and decided to stay with the team that he loved so much. According to reports coming out, Chip was in the process of finalizing a deal that would have made him the new coach of the Bucaneers after Raheem Morris got fired.
Chip has led the Oregon Ducks to Pac-10/12 titles the last three years, and turned a weak football program into a complete powerhouse.
At first it seemed like Kelly would jump ship to the NFL after having a few secret meetings with Tampa Bay general manager Mark Dominik, and members of the Glazer family, who own the Buccs. Chip even went as far as cancelling a planned recruiting trip to Sacramento in order to finalize a deal with Tampa Bay.
After the national media caught wind of the story, Chip changed his mind. Now he’s back coaching the team that he took to the BCS games for the past three years, two Rose Bowls and the BCS championship game in case you were wondering. It’s back to square one for the Buccs, who have already interviewed eight different candidates, including former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman, former Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress, veteran NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer and former Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, who has since taken the Miami Dolphins coaching job.
