Must-See Plants on the Botanist’s World Tour

There are some truly wild and wondrous species of plants out there, each unique in their own way and all of them definitely out of this world. Popular for their amazing sizes, rarity, aroma and other unique characteristics, there are some flowers out there that you don’t want to miss. Wherever you are travelling, be sure to stop and smell the roses, or whatever other wacky flower you can find!

Rafflesia Arnoldii
This captivating flower is only found in Indonesia and Malaysia, and has amazed people with its incredible size and also its inescapable stench. Smelling like decomposing flesh, this parasitic plant holds the title for the largest flower in the world and looks like something straight out of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. These flowers generally grow in steep and leech-infested parts of the jungle, so you will want to check yourself into one of the Indonesia or Malaysia hotels to clean yourself up after visiting this magnificent flower.
Medinilla Waterhousei

Commonly known as the tagimaucia plant, this flower can only be found in the highland rainforests of the Fijian island of Taveuni. This beautiful crimson and white flower can be found in 30 centimeter-long hanging clusters at an elevation around 600 meters, and only between October and December. Fiji holiday packages often include cruises to different islands, so get on one and make sure you get a glimpse of this Fijian emblem as it will be difficult to find it on your own.
Welwitschia Mirabilis

This “living fossil” is only found in the Namib Desert in Namibia and Angola. This plant is special as it only grows two thick, leathery leaves during its life, both of which split and fray over time and spill beyond the plant making it look like a large tangled mass of long leaves. One of the most spectacular things about this plant is that it can live between 4 and 15 centuries with the same two leaves.

Amorphophallus Titanium

This spectacular flower is native to Indonesia, producing a central shaft that is taller than a man, and emits the scent of rotting flesh, causing it to be named ‘corpse flower’ by the locals. Though it’s not the largest flower in the world, it is special mostly because it only blooms once every few years. Basically it is nearly impossible to find one of these flowers in bloom, but you never know your luck!
Nepenthes Rajah

This carnivorous plant is one of the largest known pitcher plant, growing in the Highlands of Borneo and is considered an endangered species. Although they have been recorded to consume unlucky frogs, birds and small mammals, generally these plants prefer to eat unsuspecting insects. Special because of its large size, these flowers are big enough to hold up to 3.5 liters of water plus another 2.5 liters of digestive fluids. You are definitely a lucky person if you stumble across one of these!
Dendroseris Neriifolia

This flowering plant is found only on Chilean Robinson Crusoe Island, and is famous because there is only one plant of this species that exists in the wild, making it the most endangered plant species in the world.
