The World’s Most Economical Cars

Fuel economy is an important subject these days. Petrol and diesel prices are ever increasing, and concerns about emissions and the impact of motoring on the environment mean that many people are choosing their cars not based on whether Volvo service costs are higher than Nissan service costs, or which car handles better, but on which car guzzles the least gas.

So, which cars are the most efficient?

1: The Kia Rio 1.1 is a roomy, five-door, five-seat supermini that’s certainly economical. It manages 88.3mpg, and claims to be the most efficient conventional engine car in the world. The Kia Rio 1.1 Ecodynamics retails for £11,895.

2: The Smart Fortwo CDI diesel manages 85.6mpg. It’s a two seater, and the engine isn’t the fastest or most powerful on the market, but it’s a low cost, efficient diesel car. It’s cheaper than the Kia Rio Ecodynamics, too – costing just £9,925.

3: The Toyota Prius T3 averages 72.4mpg, and is low emissions too, putting out just 89g/km CO2. A new Prius costs around £20,695.

4: The Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion manages 80.7mpg, and emits 91g/km CO2. It’s diesel powered, but the engine has a bit more oomph than the Fortwo. It can be found on sale for £14,680.

5: The Fiat 500 0.9 Twinair boasts cutting edge technology and low emissions. It puts out 95g/km CO2, and returns 68.9mpg, which isn’t bad considering the size and power of the vehicle. It’s at the lower end of the price range too, costing around £10,865.

The above are just a few fuel efficient vehicles. There are many others to choose from, and there are even some used cars with spectacular fuel efficiency cropping up on the market. If you don’t want to, or can’t afford to, buy a new car, then you can always try to pull some more mileage out of your existing vehicle.
Getting your car serviced regularly is a good way to get more mileage out of it. You might cringe at the thought of shelling out for a Volvo service, but what you pay out in Volvo service costs you will quickly recoup in improved handling, safety, and fuel efficiency.
If you already know that your car is in good condition, but you still aren’t getting the stated mileage out of it, try clearing out your boot. It’s amazing what people store in the boots of their car. Those old books and records that didn’t sell at the car boot sale may be adding more weight than you think!
Finally, take a good look at your driving habits. Try to slow down more gently, avoid breaking sharply, accelerate gently, stay within the speed limit at all times, and kill your engine if you know that you’ll be sitting still for more than a couple of minutes. These small changes to your driving habits could save you a lot of money, and a lot of fuel usage, over the course of a year if you spend a lot of time on the roads.
