Get Relief from Back Pain

Muscular pain of the lower back, upper back and shoulders is particularly common, particularly amongst working adults and is notably caused by excessive use, lifting overbearing weights which all lead to potential stains and injury.

How do you treat back pain?

You might be forgiven for thinking that staying off your feet and lying in bed would be the answer.  However it’s actually proven that staying as active as possible will lead to a faster recovery and reduce your back pain. Inactivity over a prolonged period of time will cause weakness, loss of flexibility and stiffness so we recommend you get back on your feet just as soon as your pain levels allow.

Any exercises or activities that you perform should not be overly or immediately demanding. Heavy lifting for example would be more than likely to only cause further distress of injury. Keeping active for your well being and backs sake essentially means a combination of aerobic exercise, eased stretches and eventually more progressive and slowly intensified strengthening and conditioning exercises.

There are other benefits of doing these exercises, you’ll be proofing yourself against future strain or injury, increasing your physical strength and any work out that gets the heart beating above normal rate is considered good for your body’s overall health and well being.

It is important to consult your doctor or physician before attempting these exercises as some may not be appropriate for helping the particular type of injury sustained. Take this as a general guide only.

What exercises can I perform?

Walking

Sustained and brisk aerobic walking done at a sensible pace with the correct body posture for a reasonable length of time, between no less than 10 minutes to 60 minutes will tone an entire group of  upper leg muscles located around you thigh and buttock, which feed and are connected directly into your lower back.

Go Swimming!

Staying motivated during times of chronic back pain can be an immense challenge, sometimes equal to overcoming the pain itself. Depending on preference, you may find swimming to be a more pleasant means of treating your pain. Swimming strokes will give you the same aerobic benefits, and also greatly help to increase flexibility, dexterity and strength whilst reducing body stiffness. Swimming is a great all round work out due to using all the main muscular groups in synergy.

Yoga

Performing Yoga is probably one of the better choices for starting out as this can still be done within the comfort of your own home simply by obtaining 4 – 5 exercises that target the back. Use online resources or buy a DVD.  If you need the motivation and reassurance of others, you may wish to seek out professional classes and your doctor may even be able to inform you of existing suitable classes for injury rehabilitation.

These exercises can be used on their own or in conjunction with one another for greater effect. Your determination and resolve will see you through any uncomfortable periods and ensure you’re fit and back to full health relatively quickly.
