Hello, Work: I’m Coming Home!

If you think about it, people have been working from home since the beginning of time. In fact, most people really did not work away from home until a couple hundred years ago. Now many people are wanting to work from home. And businesses are beginning to realize that they can save costs by outsourcing jobs to people who work from their homes.

All types of people work from home. Some work full-time, and some work part-time. Some people are trying to make ends meet, and some are just looking for some extra cash for holiday shopping or vacations. Men, women, single people, married people, and parents can all find a way to earn an income from their homes. However, one thing is common among all: self-discipline. You see, it takes a lot more discipline to make yourself work when no one is looking than it does when the boss may pop around the corner at any minute.

One of the great benefits of working at home is that there is a lot more flexibility. You can choose when to take calls, answer e-mails, or write your documents. Jobs that have milestones are especially nice because you can set your own pace. Another perk is that time is not wasted driving; for someone that lives in a rural area, than can be 1 to 2 hours a day. Time is even saved by not having to dress up every day; as long as you do not have a video teleconference or a face-to-face meeting, no one will care that you typed a report in your pajamas.

So, where would you find work to do at home? That really depends upon your skills and resources. If you enjoy teaching people, you could get a job either as a tutor on Tutor.com or as an online instructor for a university. If you have a landline telephone, high-speed Internet, and a house with a low decibel level, you could be a customer service representative with a place like Alpine Access. If you like to make crafts, try selling them on etsy.com. Writing jobs (as well as other types) can be found on elance.com. Then of course there are the well-known jobs such as babysitting, multi-level marketing, and the like.

Working at home can be a good choice for many people. Flexibility is one benefit. You also do not have to spend money on transportation or an extensive wardrobe. For businesses, it saves money on space and equipment; in addition, they do not have to pay benefits for a full-time employee on location.

Here are some pitfalls to avoid. First, do not fall for an “easy” way to earn. Wealth can usually only be gained through time, education, skills, and good old hard work. Second, most legitimate work-from-home opportunities do not require a monetary investment from you. Third, check up on a business with the Better Business Bureau and other trusted entities to be sure that it is not a scam. Now have fun working from your home!
