Unusual College Courses

Starting college is an exciting and amazing thing that should spark a new sense of independence, identity and responsibility in you. One of the main parts of college (aside from the partying, making new friend and stopping up until 5am) is the course you sign up for, but don’t be put off by the traditional courses if that’s not the kind of person you are. There are plenty of courses out there for every kind of person and every kind of interest, so do your research and find one that truly suits you! Here a list of the craziest, quirkiest most unusual courses we could find. Enjoy!

Invented Languages: Klingon and Beyond: (University of Texas, Austin)

You don’t have to be a sci-fi nerd to appreciate the subject matter in this course at the University of Texas. It has a whole course concentrating on all the reasons, rules and social realities of these invented languages.

Mail Order Brides. Understanding the Philippines in Southeast Asian Context: John Hopkins University

This course teaches students about the rise in mail order brides and why it’s so popular in certain parts of the world.

The Simpsons and Philosophy: UC Berkeley

This course explores how The Simpsons has gone beyond just entertaining children and has now propelled itself into being a genuine observation on popular culture.

UFOs In American Society: (Temple University)

If you ever watched war of the worlds and wished you could only learn more, then you’ll be jealous of the pupils at Temple University who get to learn more about the role of Aliens and UFOs in modern society.

Alien Sex: University of Rochester

Even though there is no proven existence of aliens, students on this course can study the way aliens and their sexual preferences and habits have been portrayed in the media. All sounds a bit bizarre to me.

The Amazing World of Bubbles: Cal-Tech University

This course explores the potential of energy inside every bubbles. It is not however remotely linked to bubble baths or bubble wrap.

Sex, Rugs, Salt & Coal: Cornell University

Perhaps the most catchy course name ever… this course teaches its students everything the name suggests. Focusing on sex slavery and slave trading throughout history.

As you can see, there really are many, many options out there for everyone who is setting off to college. If you want to find out about the obscure courses your college offers, then just give them a call! Most will happily advise you on all their courses, and they most likely have a little booklet full of the courses that they offer.
