Classic Movie Makeover Scenes
Classic Movie Makeover Scenes
We all love a film where the ugly duckling, once shunned and ignored, is transformed, propelled into popularity and gets the guy she longed for. It doesn’t get much more clichéd than that but still these movies warm the cockles of our hearts so much so that we spend millions at the box office every year getting our film fix. There have been several especially memorable makeovers which have reached classic status. Here we delve in to the archives and pull out our all time favourite film transformations.
Sandy in Grease
Many would argue that Sandy was just fine the way she was. However, she had a reputation for being a bit of a goodie two shoes and after getting in with rebel Betty Rizzo and falling for swoonster Danny she decided an image overhaul was needed. What followed was one of the most famous and tongue in cheek makeovers in the movie world with Sandy swapping her calf length skirts and pig tails for all over leather and a perm. The transformation worked for both Sandy and Olivia Newton John, the actress that played her and they became sex symbols overnight.

Tai in Clueless
Tai is a very awkward, geeky high school student who also happens to be the new girl. Luckily two of the most popular girls in town befriend her and make it their mission to transform her. With new clothes, makeup and a new hairstyle Tai bags herself a boyfriend and lots of new friends. It’s a tad shallow to say the least, but has all the perfect ingredients for a successful high school movie.
Vivian in Pretty Woman
A cult classic which has been watched the world over; this film revolves around the blossoming romance between call-girl Vivian and her rich client Edward. A famous scene in the film shows Vivian walking into a very high class shop in her normal every day clothing only to be looked down at by the high brow shop assistants. After Edward flashes the cash and spends a small fortune on making her look presentable she returns to the shop only to watch the same assistants jaw drop open. A small victory against snootiness.

Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady
Cockney Eliza is a flower girl and, to put it nicely, a little rough around the edges. She is taken under the wing of a professor who sets himself the enormous task of transforming her into the queen of London society. After elocution and etiquette lessons, a new wardrobe and a good sprucing up, he achieves his goal and she goes from a working class ‘commoner’ to the most sought after and refined women in the whole of London.

Cinderella
The ultimate rags to riches transformation took place in the 1950 Walt Disney film adaptation, and was an inspiration to many little girls all over the world. The film begins with Cinderella, dressed in rags, cleaning the castle in which her wicked step-mother and her two ugly daughters live after Cinderella’s father died. Cinderella is treated terrible and begins to believe she is resigned to a life of poverty and tyranny. Thanks to the fairy godmother Cinderella is transformed into a beautiful princess so she can attend the ball where the prince of the land will choose his wife. After a few setbacks it all ends happily with Cinderella being whisked off to start her new royal life.
