Great Movie Heist Getaways
Great Heist Getaways on Film
Some of the most nail-biting and exciting film scenes have been getaways. The dramatic tension that comes from not knowing when or how the protagonists are going to make their escape, and the thrill of the chase and escape are real edge-of-the-seat stuff. Here are five of the best examples of the genre.
The Italian Job
This one really is the ultimate classic heist film. A comedy classic starring Michael Caine, the Italian Job centres around a bank heist in the Italian city of Turin. Having just left prison, Charlie decides he has a big job to do. Specifically, stealing $4 million dollars worth of gold bars from a bank, right under the nose of the Italian mafia. The getaway cars? Three Mini Coopers. They manage to get into the cars without being stopped, but are chased dramatically all over the city, causing traffic jams and mayhem as they go.

Heat
Heat centres on a group of professional criminals, who make their living carrying out bank robberies and the like. They botch a job that they would normally have found easy, and as a result plan one final retirement job to put right the wrong. Unfortunately for them, the police are now on their trail as a result of the first job, and the film really kicks into gear with a terrifying chase and gun battle through the streets of LA.

Reservoir Dogs
It’s not the most successful getaway, but it is exciting. Reservoir Dogs’ storyline hinges on a botched getaway early in the film. The characters in the film try to carry out the robbery of a jewellery shop, but are foiled by police who turn up with guns and kill one of their number before they manage to make their getaway.

Inside Man
In Inside Man, what seems to be a perfect bank heist goes wrong. The story twists and turns as the police and criminals try and outwit each other as they negotiate with each other. Robber Dalton Russell is hidden behind a fake wall in the bank, and escapes a week later. However, he doesn’t get away for life – a twist in the tale sees him behind bars in the end.

Ocean’s Eleven
In this film a group of professional thieves break into three Las Vegas casinos on the same night. They come up with an elaborate plan that involves staging a fake heist to confuse the casino owner, and creating a fake police SWAT team of thieves to attend to the robbery.
