Ensuring Your Garage Door Is Safe
Let’s be honest with ourselves…the majority of us aren’t thinking about how secure our garage doors are. We don’t blame you; we know it isn’t a top priority for a lot of people. You either moved into a property and just assumed it was OK or you bought a new door and didn’t even take security into account. But the question is: should you?
The fact is you probably should be worrying about it. Just think what your garage contains for a minute. Cars, bikes, power tools to name a few. These are likely to be the most expensive items you own. Now you need to consider just what’s protecting these high ticket items. A lock that can pretty easily be picked, hammered or in some cases just forced?
There are solutions out there from the simple and cost effective to the expensive and downright unnecessary (biometric door locks spring to mind). Even a solid padlock or combination locks (and you can pick a thick solid lock up for next to nothing) are going to make an instant difference over a garage doors standard lock, although they can be easy enough to deal with as well for the persistent burglar. Beefing up the t-handle lock that likely exists on the garage door with a more solid version is another quick and effective solution.
For the super security conscious, electronic locking solutions maybe the most suitable – especially if your garage contains some really expensive items. Unlocked with a keypad, unless someone knows your code or they have some kind of Mission Impossible keypad hacking device there’s no way they’re getting in.
Door defenders are a robust solution, and many are available at a low price considering the additional security they bring. If you’ve got a door defender, you’re not only going to make your door more secure, but you’re also going to ensure you meet the security requirements of your insurance provider.
If you’re due to upgrade your old garage door then it might be worth you’re time to look into electrically operated garage doors. Without the garage door operator, no one is getting in. Of course, this means you also can’t get in if you lose your operator, but at least you’ll know how effective electric doors can be. When they’re closed they’re locked automatically and they stay locked up tight until you hit that button again. This can be a huge benefit if you’re one of those people that always second guesses if you locked your garage door or not.
Access through a garage door is simpler and in many cases easier for burglars. You wouldn’t leave your house unprotected, so why would you leave your garage unprotected? If you’ve got anything in your garage that’s more valuable than a dust covered rake and a few boxes of clutter, it’s going to be well worth your while to make an investment in extra security. If you can access your home through a door in your garage then you should really get moving.
Are you reconsidering yet? Still not? Go to YouTube and search for ‘how to break into a garage’. 6 seconds. That’s all it can take to separate you from some of your prized possessions.
