When You Think About Denver, You Should Think About Beer
When people think of the Napa Valley, they think of fine wine. Yet when people think of Denver, they usually think of the Broncos, the Mile High City, or perhaps their favorite omellete. However, Denver is beer what the Napa Valley is to wine – Denver is one of the greatest beer cities in America.
In fact, the history of Denver is uniquely intermixed with beer. It’s rumored that Denver’s first permanent structure was a saloon. Golden, Colorado’s one-time territorial capital, is currently home to one of the biggest breweries in the world. Even today, Denver’s former mayor and Colorado’s current governor, John Hickenlooper, built his fortune with Denver’s Wynkoop Brewery, a brewery Hickenlooper helped to found.
Denver itself is a hub of the American beer industry – more than 100 independent breweries call the Denver metro area their home. Beer is big business in the entire state of Colorado, as the giant corporate breweries of Miller-Coors and Anheuser-Busch are located in Golden and Ft. Collins, Colorado, respecitevely.
Denver’s final claim to fame is that it plays host to the oldest and biggest beer festival in the nation. The Great American Beer Festival has been an annual event in Denver for 30 years and made the Guinness Book of World Records for the amount of different beers on tap. Denver is to beer as Napa is to wine – every beer enthusiast should make the trip.
