If you’re interested in culinary arts, you may have the dream of one day becoming an executive chef. While this can be a lofty goal, there are a number of things you can do to increase your chances of landing your dream job. Whether it means getting the proper education or loving what you do, anyone that enjoys the culinary field can become an executive chef and here’s how.

Get Educated

An education is important for getting your foot in the door. You want to choose the best culinary school in your area. If you want the best education possible, you should be willing to move to where the best schools are. If you want to be an executive chef, you can help make yourself look better qualified by having attended the best school. As for your degree, you want to obtain the highest degree possible at your school of choice. It also doesn’t hurt to minor in business because you will be running the kitchen as an executive chef so it pays to know how to manage employees.

Earn Experience

You can’t expect to graduate culinary school and immediately land your dream job. The culinary field requires paying a lot of dues. In fact, your first job may be working as a prep chef or even as a busboy. However, with perseverance, you will move up the ladder. Most executive chefs have worked at many different restaurants before finally becoming executive chefs. Another tip that many chefs give is to earn experience in different countries. Living and working an another country can give you great experience that restaurants are looking for.

Master Many Skills

An executive chef is expected to be able to handle any job in the kitchen. This is where your extensive experience will come in handy. You want to master as many skills as possible before applying to become an executive chef, from the roles of a sous chef to learning to read the point of sale restaurant system.

Love What You Do

Last, but not least, you must have a passion for what you do. Restaurants want chefs that will bring passion and creativity into their kitchen. Usually when restaurants hire a new executive chef it is because the last chef was burned out to the point that they got fired or quit. Another reason is because the restaurant wants a fresh spin on the menu. Regardless, you must love your job.

Working as an executive chef is the dream job of most who enter the culinary field. However, this isn’t a career you can just walk into after working fast food. It takes a great education, years of experience, and mastering many culinary skills. More importantly, you must be passionate about what you do.
