Japanese car maker Toyota Motor Corp. Has announced that it plans on recalling around 2.77 million vehicles worldwide, including the highly successful Prius hybrid car. The vehicles are being recalled because of problems that have to do with the steering mechanism and the hybrid system water pump.
Toyota will recall 13 different car models in Japan that were sold between August 2000 and January 2012, according to filings with Japan’s transport ministry. It is estimated that about 1.5 million of the recalls are from cars in Japan. This isn’t even the first recall Toyota has done this year.
About a month ago, Toyota recalled more than 7.4 million vehicles around the world due to faulty power window switches that posed a potential fire hazard. That is the biggest single recall since Ford took 8 million vehicles off the road in 1996.
