You’ve probably heard all this in countless talking points before: the most important thing in your daily diet is to avoid alcohol, red meat and fat and to keep your portion sizes under control. While that is very good advice in general you need more than those guidelines to keep a healthy diet. A healthy lifestyle, like the ones most of us strive for starts from having a balanced diet, both in the number of calories we eat and in what we get those calories from.

The Perfect Diet

While there are more people nowadays who choose to give up meat entirely and quite a few who favour eating anything you want within certain calorie limits the truth is that you need a good balance of both to keep a healthy diet. The perfect diet has several days without meat and overall portion control. But you shouldn’t give up on meat entirely unless you have health or moral concerns about it. Meat, particularly the red meat that a lot of people argue against is actually quite good for you in moderate portions. Eating a small lean strip steak, like one of the all-natural steaks from http://www.milehighsteaks.com/ once a week is perfect for restocking your vitamin b12, iron and magnesium levels. Of course it is important not to overdo it and to maintain a healthy diet in general. Unlike meat, fried foods are never good for you and you’re better off getting your fats from avocados, nuts or olive oil than from fries.

Getting or Staying in Shape

Of course you can’t live a healthy lifestyle without at least a little bit of exercise everyday. Just 30 minutes of light to moderate exercise has been proven to cut your risk of heart disease by 50%. More exercise, like working out three times a week increases your potential lifespan by up to 20 years, depending on the shape you’re in. Of course all this exercise has to be fuelled somehow and the absolute best food for long time weight control are high protein foods like legumes, lean meats, beef in particular and some vegetables. Carbs, especially healthy carbs from fruit are the perfect pick-me-up snack after a workout as they boost your blood sugar moderately and sustainably.

Balancing the Physical and Mental

Generally speaking, a healthy lifestyle is a major if not the primary factor in having a normal life. Depression and other conditions are often described as ‘chemical imbalances’ in the brain by doctors. Well, with a healthy diet that offers you all the necessary nutrients and a training regimen the chances of you developing a mental condition or even feeling under the weather decrease dramatically. There is a distinct medical correlation between unhealthy eating patterns and poor mental health. This doesn’t mean that going on a diet will cure you of depression but it can’t hurt your heath, can it?

So remember that the most important thing for a healthy lifestyle is a balanced diet that includes all the major food groups and all the necessary nutrients you need. And remember that what you eat affects more than how you look. It can change everything from life expectancy to your outlook on life.

Biotech company Monsanto has announced that they saw a 22 percent increase in revenue in the second quarter thanks to strong sales of it’s seeds. The agricultural products company, which used to make agent orange for the U.S. government, saw a boost to its full-year earning thanks to strong performances in the first two quarters.

News of the record profits comes at a particularly bad time, especially after critics have been slamming lawmakers for including in legislation a provision, dubbed the “Monsanto Protection Act,” that would shield the company from lawsuits over health risks related to genetically modified seeds.

Critics say the provision in the new law would put Monsanto and companies like it above the law by stopping officials’ ability to block the sale of the seeds even if they prove dangerous to consumers. Monsanto says it earned $1.48 billion, or $2.74 per share in the three months ended Feb. 13. That compares to earnings of $1.21 billion, or $2.24 per share, a year ago.

Revenue climbed 15 percent to $5.47 billion.

Fresh Ideas for Food @ Starbucks for Vegans

>Ever since it’s inception, Starbucks has been the place to go for high quality gourmet coffee drinks. For many people, a visit to Starbucks is a weekly treat, and with so many great options, it can be difficult to decide what to purchase. Unfortunately, those who adhere to a vegan lifestyle may be confronted with a dilemma that most people do not have to deal with. For vegans, it can be difficult to know which offerings may contain animal byproducts. Many Starbucks items can contain animal products, even in those options which seem unlikely to contain much more than coffee and flavored syrup. Fortunately, Starbucks also has a wide range of delicious options which do not contain any animal products. For vegans who enjoy Starbucks, this article will highlight several delicious vegan friendly options which are offered at most Starbucks locations.

Fortunately, most of the vegan friendly offerings at Starbucks are some of the healthiest items on the menu, offering delicious flavor with fewer calories. There are several drinks which fit a vegan’s lifestyle, including their full range of Tazo teas, which can be served up hot or cold, and mixed in with a sweetener of choice, for the perfect way to quench one’s thirst in the summer, or warm up on a cold winter’s day.

Most people go to Starbucks for the coffee, and there are many great coffee items which prove to be vegan friendly. Black coffee is the perfect eye opening breakfast drink, and with their wide range of premium coffee selections, it is sure to please the senses. Steamed soy with syrup is also another great breakfast drink selection. For that ultimate “pick me up”, try an expresso macchiato with soy. Soy lattes offer a great creamy coffee taste which can be enjoyed with or without syrup. Frappuccinos with soy milk made for delicious dessert drinks, but skip the whipped cream, as it contains dairy.

For those who enjoy eating at Starbucks, there are also several great options for vegans, including their “perfect porridge,” made with soy milk and dried fruit. Pair this healthy option with a soy latte in the morning and one will be fully energized for the day ahead. Many Starbucks also offer fresh fruit salads, made fresh daily, and served chilled. To quell the munchies, there is usually a variety of fresh fair trade fruit such as bananas, and other snacks such as roasted almonds, fair trade chocolate bars, and sea salt chips.

Starbucks has been widely regarded as a progressive, “forward thinking” business, which embraces the concept of adhering to an environmentally friendly lifestyle. Because of this, they have always made a conscious effort to offer consumers a wide variety of vegan friendly options; And most baristas will go out of their way to provide customers with the best service possible. Because of their principles and customer service, Starbucks has become the nation’s leading coffee house, and will continue to grow and expand it’s line of high quality, vegan friendly options.

“The Host”

This movie, “The Host” is a film adaptation of a book written by Twilight author Stephanie Meyer.

“The Host”

The Good News: “The Host” is nothing like Twilight nor is it supposed to be haha.

The Bad News: The best part of my trip to AMC Times Square to watch this movie came during the closing credits. A song called “Radioactive” (by Imagine Dragons) started playing and everyone (except me) was lip singing along to the lyrics as they exited the theatre. Good song, anyway back to the ”The Host”…

“The Host” Movie Review

The Plot: ”The Host” is about parasitic aliens and contrary to their description they are supposed to be loving, caring and peaceful beings. Yet, they come to earth to take over the minds and bodies of humans in an effort to make our planet a more peaceful and harmonious world.

But of course like in all alien invasion flicks, in ”The Host” the humans aren’t having it! It’s one thing to take over our planet but it’s another thing to take over our planet AND our bodies lol. So yeah, the humans naturally resist the parasitic alien occupiers.

Now Here’s The Twist: In ”The Host” a “resistor” named Melanie (main character played by Saoirse Ronan) is captured and her body is taken over by an alien soul. Yet, Melanie continues to resist and convinces the alien soul occupying her body to switch sides. And so the fight to save humans begins…

Rating: I give ”The Host” a 3 out 5 stars (mostly for Saoirse Ronan’s performance). Saoirse Ronan was born in the Bronx, New York City, and grew up in Ireland (interesting). She is the only reason why this film is worth watching.

My Recommendation: Wait for this to come out on DVD or digital download

What Fruits and Vegetables to Grow Yourself!

Whether you are new to gardening or a pro, here are 5 fruits and vegetables to grow yourself you have no excuse to not grow yourself! These ‘superfoods’ are super easy to plant, grow, and even better to eat!

Fruits and Vegetable to Grow Yourself: Pictured here are Goji Berries!

What do I mean by superfood? They are very healthy for you, the more natural or as close to their original state you can eat these foods the more that the catchy name ‘superfood’ reigns true. If you see that term on a packaged/processed food…it is more of a marketing ploy than anything else. And all vegetables are super and but really benefit the most from any one aspect of your diet, you need to be eating a balanced diet. Just one of the benefits to growing these fruits and veggies yourself is that you KNOW that they are organic! To receive the most nutritional content from your veggies as possible you should do one of the following: eat raw, sauté, or steam. Eating raw is the best, I love snacking on a peeled raw zucchini while cooking dinner (it’s an acquired taste though). It fills you up and is PACKED with nutrients! Eating raw provides your body with all of the nutrients from that food. Sautéing is the next best if you cook it dry, you can add a splash of olive oil after cooking. Steaming is the third best. Steaming keeps a significantly higher amount of nutrients than boiling does. This is true as long as you use the least amount of water as possible while steaming. When you’re done steaming, incorporate the water from the steamer into your meal or use later as vegetable stock. Get creative! Try not to boil, microwave, or fry anything if possible…kills the nutrients! My family had a medium sized garden on our property when I was a young girl that was left from the previous owners and I was the only one interested in maintaining it…if I could do it at 8 years old (with no instruction), you can too!

5 Fruits and Vegetables to Grow Yourself!!

  1. Edamame (name meaning young soybeans)!

Superfood Qualities: Protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants.

Tips: Summertime crop (for warm weather), takes about 90-100 days to mature. Once mature, pick immediately! Their window for picking is about 1 week, so when you see the pods plump and green pick the whole thing! Cook and freeze whatever you won’t be eating that day.

   2. Bluberries!

Superfood Qualities: Antioxidants, vitamin C, and vitamin K.

Tips: Grow in average soil, not alkaline. If needed grow in a container. You can now grow different types of blueberries that grow best in all different types of climates, check to see what kind you have and what the recommended conditions are for it.

    3. Goji Berries!

Superfood Qualities: Vitamin A and antioxidants.

Tips: Grow in warm weather and grow in areas where it will have some room, these tend to expand. Prune as necessary to control the size. Once picked, let dry until they’re wrinkly like raisins. Great as salad toppings!

   4. Kiwis!

Superfood Qualities: Major vitamin C!

Tips: Kiwis do best as two, plant a male pollinator and a female vine.

   5. Kale!

Superfood Qualities: Major amounts of vitamin K and vitamin A.

Tips: Cool-season crop. Tip for serving: Can be hard to chew, cut in to small pieces, add a small amount of salt and massage in a separate bowl before serving.

Tips for spring cleaning, getting in shape, and cooking? Ahh, must be March! Time to dust off your cleaning supplies to try these tips for spring cleaning, push harder in the gym for summer, while taking advantage of the calm atmosphere induced by brisk mornings and cool evenings to cook warm comfort food for the family. Read on for some of my housekeeping secrets, health/fitness tips, and an amazing comfort food recipe (gluten free/vegan…and yes filling)! Charles Dickens described March best, “when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” I hope you find these tips for spring cleaning, getting in shape, and cooking helpful!

As March comes in to full swing I sense my domestic side taking over and I start throwing things out of closets, storage bins, and boxes under beds… as everyone in the house starts yelling about how they are going to use this or that! Sorry! If it doesn’t fit, have a purpose, or hasn’t been looked at for months it’s getting recycled, donated, stored, or thrown away! Read on for my tips for spring cleaning, getting in Shape, and cooking!

Tips for Spring Cleaning

Here are some quick tips for spring cleaning & organizing:

Spring Cleaning, where to start?

One of my tips for spring cleaning When cleaning high windows, wait for a cloudy day. If you do it on a sunny day you will inevitably get streaks. For everyday window cleaning: use a microfiber cloth and a little bit of vinegar (can kill smells and leaves surfaces shiny!).

Another one of my tips for spring cleaning is to take piles of miscellaneous papers/mail/junk and only keep the things that need your immediate attention, file or throw everything else away. Try the 43 Folders method for keeping your life organized!

To remember these tips for spring cleaning and to be thorough every year, make a list of forgotten about spots to clean like: sliding-glass door tracks, air conditioning/heater vents, behind and under the refrigerator, remove and wash the glass inside lamps, oven vent, walls, on/in/under/behind washer and dryers, etc. and every year make sure you’re getting those dirty nook and crannies!

One of my best tips for spring cleaning is to just…contain it! Everything should have a place. An easy way to do this is to buy furniture with storage capabilities. Try: Pottery Bar Mirror/Organizer, Entry Way Organizer, Laundry Room Basket System, Craft Organizer, kitchen table, a stylish bench with storage to fit anywhere in the home, and my favorite…Cookware Organizer!

These tips for spring cleaning are a great way to get ready for hosting summer parties!

After getting through your tips for spring cleaning next comes some quick tips for starting or increasing your health & fitness routine!

Figure out what your health and fitness goals are. Consider hiring a trainer or if you can’t afford to have a trainer always by your side, consider just consulting with a trainer for some tips. Your work out results are massively influenced by what your fueling your body with… in other words, what you are eating. This doesn’t just mean don’t eat badly (obviously we all know that junk food isn’t part of a successful fitness routine). What kind of foods you should eat before you work out, after, and for the rest of your day really depends on what your goals are; are you preparing for a marathon, trying to simply lose weight, gain muscle, training for a fitness competition, etc.? This is where a professional comes in handy. Stay away from stuff like weight watchers…those meal plans will always result in temporary results. Just look up what it means to eat clean and do cardio and you will save a lot of time, money, and body fat!

If you are starting a workout routine…DON’T go all out in your first week or two! That is the best way to loose motivation, increase your chances for injuries, and you will probably quit. Cardio should be done 1 hour per day for at least 5 times a week but if you are just starting out…work your way up to that, don’t be embarrassed about starting at 20 min per day, then 30 min., then 45 min. over the course of 2 weeks. Your body will thank you.

Eat breakfast and well…Eat period!! This will boost your metabolism, give you energy, and it will promote weight loss. Skipping meals and starving yourself causes your body to hold on to fat more-so when you do eat.

Drink lots of water. Keeping your body hydrated will promote health in every aspect as far as your body is concerned.

When one thinks of the enormous and incredibly complex problem of malnutrition and chronic hunger, one generally tends to start thinking towards lines of supply and logistics: “If we could only grow more food,” or “if we could only get food from fertile regions to the places where people need it,” or even, “if only we could throw more money at the problem.”

However, it is time to think of the problem from a different angle: one of food waste and food recovery. This is something the folks at Food Recovery Network have put their minds and energy towards, and they have an approach that they think could be a big part of helping hungry people around the United States receive nutrition from an unlikely source: wasted food that more privileged people would have otherwise thrown away.

Food Waste

Food Recovery Network began as an idea in 2010 at the University of Maryland, when a group of students noticed that vast amounts of food was being thrown away after large sporting events and from cafeteria dining halls. When they realized that one in eight people in the D.C. Metro area alone were suffering from hunger, a connection was made: Why can’t we recover this food before it goes to a landfill and get it to shelters where people need it?

Food waste occurs in the developed world on a massive scale and particularly on college campuses. According to the Food Recovery Network, 35 million tons of food per year is wasted in the United States alone, with only 3 percent of that food being composted or donated. That means 97 percent of wasted food ends up in landfills. Furthermore, wasted foods costs Americans $165 billion per year in logistical and landfill costs, as well as contributing a full 25 percent of methane emissions into our atmosphere.

Food Recovery

Pairing wasted food with the hungry seemed like a no-brainer; a win-win. And so it was: In the first few weeks of operation, a group of volunteer students recovered 150 to 200 pounds of food per day to give directly to shelters. By the end of the 2011-2012 school year, they had donated 30,000 meals to shelters in the D.C. Metro area.

After conducting some further research, the organizers realized that only a handful of colleges across the United States had any sort of food recovery program in place, and thus the Food Recovery Network was born in 2012, and it grew rapidly. By the end of 2012, they accomplished two major milestones: Students at their eight-member organizations recovered 50,000 meals, and their organization won a $5,000 grand prize in University of Maryland’s Kevin Bacon Do Good Challenge, as well as the $15,000 national grand prize in the Banking on Youth Competition.

How You Can Get Involved

The Food Recovery Network is showing no signs of slowing down. Branches are popping up at universities around the country, and their members are aggressively recruiting and adding even more chapters.

Starting a chapter at your own college isn’t as difficult as it might seem because Food Recovery Network provides a lot of instructions and support. On the Start a Chapter page of their website, you simply fill out a form and a regional coordinator will contact you to get the process started.

The facts are simple: One in six Americans doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from, yet recovering just 15 percent of the wasted food in the United States would feed 25 million people.

It’s really refreshing to wrap your head around the fact that a dedicated and compassionate group of students figured out a solid, actionable plan to address hunger and malnutrition, while at the same time saving taxpayer dollars and helping take a bite out of global warming. It’s not “too good to be true” either; it’s a very solid and simple plan that just needs dedicated people to step up and volunteer. Will that include you?

Fast food giant Burger King is switching up it’s menu by offering a turkey burger for the very first time. The new sandwich will be released this week and it’s part of the company’s newest limited-time offers for spring. This news comes on the heel of McDonald’s announcement of them offering a lower-calorie version of its Egg McMuffin made with egg whites.

McDonald’s and Wendy’s have never offered a turkey burger in their history, meaning Burger King would be the biggest fast-food chain to date to offer that particular sandwich. But they would not be the first. Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s both had turkey burger sandwiches on their menu in 2010. The demand for them was so great that they’re now a permanent part of the menus.

“Turkey burgers as a category is growing pretty rapidly in the restaurant space,” said Eric Hirschhorn, who heads global innovation for Burger King.

Burger King plans to offer the new turkey burger for $3.99, compared with $4.29 for its new Chipotle Whopper, which is also being introduced as part of the spring menu.

That menu will also have a veggie burger, although the only difference from the chain’s current veggie burger is that the new one has red onions.
