All life is related — and that’s not poetry, it’s biology. From the bacteria in your gut to a blue whale in the ocean, every living thing shares a common ancestor: the Last Universal Common Ancestor, or LUCA.

If we take that fact seriously, then eating, exploiting, or destroying animals stops being a matter of “choice” and becomes a question of moral consistency.

Even thinkers outside the vegan movement, like conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, have admitted that future generations will likely see meat-eaters the way we see past societies that practiced slavery — as people blinded by their own era’s norms.

The Science of Our Shared Origins

LUCA existed about 3.5 to 4 billion years ago. Through genetic analysis, scientists have found that the building blocks of every plant, animal, fungus, and microbe alive today come from the same ancient blueprint. In other words, a cow, a crow, and a cactus are not just “other” species — they are your distant relatives.

This isn’t a spiritual metaphor. It’s hard evolutionary evidence: the DNA that codes for basic cellular processes in you is almost identical to the DNA in them.

The only real difference between you and a chicken is the evolutionary path you each took.

The Ethical Leap

Once you accept that all life is related, the way we treat animals becomes a moral test.

Philosophers like Peter Singer have long argued that if we can live healthy lives without killing animals, then choosing to kill them is a moral failure.

Yuval Noah Harari calls industrial animal farming “one of the worst crimes in history,” not out of sentimentality but because it causes mass suffering to beings capable of pain, fear, and social bonds — just like us.

Even if you reject the idea of “rights” for animals, the practical case is overwhelming.

The meat industry is a climate disaster, responsible for massive greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water use. By reducing or eliminating animal products, we cut down our personal environmental footprint faster than almost any other action.

Future Generations Will Judge Us

Every generation looks back at the moral blind spots of the past with disbelief. Child labor, public executions, burning people for “witchcraft” — all were once normal.

Ben Shapiro, not a vegan himself, has openly acknowledged that eating animals will likely be in that same category of moral horror when history looks back at us.

The shift won’t just be about ethics. It will be about self-preservation. The same factory farms that exploit animals also breed antibiotic-resistant bacteria and accelerate climate change.

That’s not an “animal rights” issue — that’s a human survival issue.

A World Built on Kinship

Movies like Avatar dramatize this concept — characters literally “plug into” animals, experiencing their thoughts and memories.

While we can’t do that, the genetic connection is real. The web of life is not a metaphorical tapestry but a literal one, woven from shared DNA. Every time we destroy part of it, we weaken the whole — and ourselves.

If all life is related, then veganism and eco-friendly living aren’t extreme positions — they’re the logical conclusion of the science we already know.

When future generations judge us, they won’t ask why we didn’t understand. They’ll ask why we understood and still chose to look away

In today’s world, where every flight, car ride, and even your daily activities contribute to carbon emissions, the importance of carbon offsetting is growing rapidly.

But what exactly is carbon offsetting, and how can you use it to make a positive impact on the planet?

In this guide, we’ll break down what carbon offsetting is, how it works, and how you can participate in it – all in a simple, relatable way.

What Is Carbon Offsetting?

At its core, carbon offsetting is a way to “balance out” the carbon dioxide (CO2) you emit into the atmosphere. It works by funding projects that either remove or reduce CO2, such as renewable energy, reforestation, or methane capture.

The idea is simple: for every ton of CO2 you emit, you invest in a project that absorbs or reduces that same amount of CO2. It’s like planting a tree for every gallon of gas you burn, but on a much larger scale.

How Does Carbon Offsetting Work?

When you buy carbon offsets, the money you pay supports various environmental projects. These might include wind farms, reforestation efforts, or methane capture projects. For example, global organizations like the Gold Standard and Verified Carbon Standard ensure that carbon offset projects meet high standards and genuinely reduce emissions.

To get started, you first calculate your carbon footprint, which is a measure of the emissions from your daily activities like driving or using electricity. Then, you can buy the equivalent amount of carbon offsets. Websites like Terrapass and Carbon Footprint Ltd. make it easy to calculate your carbon footprint and offset your emissions in just a few clicks.

Leading Carbon Offset Projects

Here are a few types of carbon offset projects that are helping fight climate change:

Renewable Energy Projects: These projects support clean energy sources like wind, solar, and hydroelectric power. By backing these initiatives, you’re helping to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels that harm the planet.

Reforestation and Afforestation: Trees are nature’s natural carbon capture machines! Supporting projects that plant trees helps absorb CO2 from the air. Groups like One Tree Planted and Rainforest Alliance work on reforestation projects worldwide, from the Amazon to Africa.

Methane Capture: Methane is a potent greenhouse gas. Projects that capture methane from landfills or agriculture help prevent further harm. Companies like Climeworks are pioneering new technologies that remove CO2 directly from the air and store it underground.

Conservation and Protection: By supporting projects that protect forests and natural habitats, you help keep the CO2 stored in these ecosystems from being released back into the atmosphere.

How You Can Get Involved

As an individual, it’s easy to participate in carbon offsetting. The first step is calculating your carbon footprint. Tools like the EPA Carbon Footprint Calculator can help you understand where your emissions come from – whether it’s from your commute or your home’s energy use.

Once you know your footprint, you can buy carbon offsets through certified platforms. For example, if you travel a lot, you can offset your flights with platforms like MyClimate or Atmosfair. Big companies like Microsoft and Delta Airlines have also adopted carbon offsetting as a major part of their sustainability strategies.

Why Does Carbon Offsetting Matter?

While carbon offsetting shouldn’t be seen as a free pass to keep polluting, it’s an excellent way to take responsibility for your carbon emissions. It’s empowering to know that with a small investment, you can support global projects that fight climate change. Additionally, as more people and businesses get involved, it encourages governments and corporations to adopt sustainable practices.

In the grand fight against climate change, every little bit counts. By investing in carbon offsetting projects, you’re not only reducing your personal or business carbon footprint, but you’re also contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Next time you fly, drive, or even just use electricity, consider how you can offset your emissions and make a positive difference for the planet.

PokerStars.com is continuing its dominance of the online poker world through growth in emerging markets, according to a new study commissioned by the Internet portal. Internet-based Texas Hold’em has seen high growth in Eastern Europe and Asia the past few years.

Recently, China, South Korea, Russia, and countries of the former Soviet Union are identified as having the highest rates of growth. Additionally, South America (particularly Brazil), Western and Central Europe, and New Zealand are producing higher participation rates in the game of poker than other countries around the world, according to the gaming site.

According to the Isle of Man-based company, it “commissioned a heat map to track that year-on-year growth to show when and where poker exploded onto the scene . . . . North America is still enjoying a rapid rise in 2006 in the years following [Chris] Moneymaker’s momentous [World Series of Poker] win. The growth continues, but just not at the same rate, while other regions and countries, such as Eastern Europe, Russia and Brazil pick up the baton.”

Since its founding in September 2001, PokerStars has emerged as the undisputed leader in online poker. Nearly a quarter of a million people played in one of its annual tournaments this year. To entice new business, the site, which is owned by the Scheinberg family, offers freerolls (free tournaments) and $1 buy-in tournaments with as much as $1 million in guaranteed cash prizes.

Not surprisingly, such promotions attract tens of thousands of players. Additionally, much smaller competitors are hard-pressed to match the large prize pools. According to Pokerscout.com, PokerStars controls 54 percent of player market share. That figure is seven times its nearest competitor.

The site has also successfully weathered the storms of the past couple of years. Canada, Mexico, and the United States are seeing some of the lowest growth rates out of any country. In April 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice shut down online poker sites operating within the United States, which caused many American professional poker players to establish residence in Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Macau, and Australia.

However, developments in North America have been offset by high growth in Europe and Asia, where the combined population – and market size – is significantly larger.

Additionally, Internet poker could soon be making a comeback into the U.S., given that many state governments are looking to raise tax revenue because of the sluggish economy.

Several states in the U.S., including California, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, and Mississippi, are seeing efforts by local legislators to pass legislation that would legalize Internet gambling. Nevada became the first state to legalize online poker which has awarded online gaming licenses to nearly 30 companies.

The Middle East has the lowest growth rate of any region since gambling is outlawed by most Islamic regimes.

Texas Hold’em has grown in popularity among Korean, Chinese, and Filipino players. The card game has also helped to make Macau a gambling hub nearly three times larger than Las Vegas in terms of annual revenue.

CAUTION: MERCURY RETROGRADE AHEAD
by Sandi Bois
Whether or not you are well versed in astrology, you have probably heard the term Mercury Retrograde (MRx). Because we are about to experience yet another MRx in late February into March 2013, it seems a particularly appropriate time to REview the significance of a MRx. As is typical for MRx,we will experience a total of three in 2013:
Feb 23-March 17
June 26-July 20
October 21-November 10
There is a great deal of misinformation about MRx. The intention of this article is to clarify the meaning of a MRx period. We can do that by beginning with the significance of Mercury. Mercury is called the “Messenger of the Gods.” In a simplified explanation, he rules communication: the mind, the intellect, ideas, thoughts, speaking and writing. This includes such things as advertising, advice, written agreements/contracts, computers, all correspondence including emails, and texts, education, interviews, mail, memory and loss of memory, the media, publications, records, reports, selling and buying, telephones, voice and writing. As he also rules all forms of transportation, he similarly rules automobiles, bicycling, buses, cabs, commuting, elevators, keys, luggage, trains, running, streets/streetcars, traffic lights, small and light vehicles and walking.
So it follows that these are the areas most likely to be affected by a MRx.
The Messenger of the Gods has received a bad rep due to these retrograde periods. Many people seem to dread MRx periods, sure that all kinds of mishaps will occur. In fact, the God of communication is mistakenly blamed for all kinds of silly things! While it is true that “issues” surrounding travel and communication seem to be spotlighted during the MRx period, there are positive things we can do to minimize any negative impact. First, we can prepare for the retrograde period. If we are aware of the timing of the retro period in advance, we can make an extra effort to make those big purchases, sign those important contracts, make the big phone calls, submit reports and documentation, repair our car or computer,or even reschedule travel plans prior to the retrograde. That sounds great but sometimes life does not work so easily; business goes on and important contracts or travel must occur during a retro period. So, here are some coping strategies for any MRx period:
MRx is a time in which we should stop to review, revisit and revise. It is not the best time to initiate or push forward on new projects. However, it is a fantastic time to review our life, thought patterns (as well as travel plans and upcoming purchases and contracts). Before moving forward, revisit the past. Take the time to clarify your needs, your priorities and your communications. Be very careful with all details (skipping steps is not allowed). Be VERY clear in all your communications, oral or written as misunderstandings can occur. Reconfirm appointments and double check your calendar often. (Late and missed appointments are a MRx casualty). Review and reread that letter, text or document BEFORE pressing send. Take the time to carefully formulate your plans, being ever ready to make revisions, edits and readjustments. If you must travel, try to simplify those plans, knowing that delays, cancellations and lost luggage are possible.
It is important to note that the three Mercury retrograde periods will occur in water signs this year. For those of you familiar with your natal chart, the first period may be of more significance to those with planets between 5 to 19 degrees Pisces. The second retro period may affect those with planets in Cancer between 13 and 23 degrees. The third retro period may affect those with planets between 2 and 18 degrees Scorpio. However, as a predictive astrologer who deplores astrological generalizations, it is important to note exactly WHICH planets will be aspected as well as the house placement. As with all astrological questions, it is best to consult a qualified astrologer to see how the astrological occurrence will SPECIFICALLY IMPACT YOU!
