The Chalet Experience – Switzerland and France
A snug chalet is a welcome option for skiers as an alternative to a hotel, and some can be an economical way to holiday on the mountain. Others are a cut above, and take inspiration from their quaint counterparts but move it to another level. Expect wood and open fires, but expert chefs and butlers replace the old style husband and wife run facilities. They are still social, but these chalets are a cut above. Here’s a round up of some top notch chalets…
- The Lodge is one of Richard Branson’s exclusive retreats, and is set in the mountains. The chef was trained by Raymond Blanc and there’s even a friendly hotel dog called Bam-Bam. The Lodge is located in the Swiss Alps near the town of Verbier, and is in prime slope side position for some skiing action. The bedrooms are spacious and modern, but maintain a rustic charm. There is even a mini ice-rink and all manner of other entertainment under the pitched roof. It is luxurious but unpretentious.
- Le Chardon in Val d’Isere offer a range of chalets from 8 to 20 berth, all equipped in luxurious fashion with excellent attention to detail. The resort is one of the best in France, and Le Chardon is an excellent place to stay if you’re visiting there.
- Hidden Dragon is a chalet with a difference. It’s building takes into consideration feng shui principles and as a result sits in perfect balance with the stunning natural surroundings. The décor is a mix of antique and modern furnishing that compliment each other as part of a delightful mix, and there is more exposed wood than you can shake a fir tree at. It is nestled in the underrated Four Valleys resort, and offers prime skiing from exquisite lodgings. Furthermore, there is the opportunity to ride with a snowboard pro and learn from his experience, as well as take part in Yoga classes, part of the resort’s holistic philosophy.
- The Chalet Mona in Megeve, France, is charming and airy. It is also well equipped and boasts it’s own chef and even butler. There is a well featured spa area and relaxing living space in the chalet annex. The Chalet Mona is a mid-range option, and one in which you would have a wonderful ski experience.
- The Chalet Zen in Zermat is authentic and charming, and located a small walk from the slopes. It overlooks outstanding views of the Matterhorn. The marble bathrooms have underfloor heating which is a great feature for cold days, but the rooms stay warm anyway in all conditions.
- As any seasoned skier knows, there’s life beyond Swizerland and France. The Chalet at 11 degrees East, Obergurgl is great for families, being located only feet away from the nursery slopes. The bar is merry, well stocked and great for after ski, and the bedrooms roomy and comfortable for a good night’s sleep.
