The winter driving season is soon going to be upon us. This means that there are going to be many unique situations on the road. You never know if the roads are going to be in perfect condition, icy, or a mixture of the two at any given time. Therefore, there are some actions you need to take and things to be aware of when driving in winter weather.
Be Aware Of Black Ice
Black ice is that stuff that forms when the weather gets colder, specifically below 32 degrees. What happens is that the air is warmer than that during the day, so the moisture is in the form of liquid water. it could be slush or a fine misting of water during the day, but it freezes at night and becomes ice. You often times cannot tell where the ice patches are, so you have to be careful when on untreated roads. Drive slowly and take your time.
White Outs Can Come Out Of Nowhere
Winter weather can often strike out of nowhere. You can be driving along and the sky is blue and sunny. However, just a couple minutes later, the weather can turn very snowy. Winds can turn falling snow, and snow on the ground, into a tornado of whiteness. The trick here is to keep your lights on, but not bright, and try to follow the tail lights of the person in front of you. Go as slow as you need to make sure that you are safe.
Know The Terrain
Knowing your terrain can be very helpful when driving in the snowy weather. Your electric car might not be able to drive so well going up a hill with six inches of snow on it. You might want to stay home until the weather gets better. On the other hand, if you have to get somewhere, you should consider snow tires and chains on your car to get through any rough roads that might be tougher on your car to handle.
Keep Your Gas Levels Up Above Half Full
When you are living in a colder climate, you should make sure you always have enough gas in the car. This is because you don’t want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere not being able to run your car. Also, you don’t want to have your gas lines freeze due to lack of gas when sitting around at night.
Driving in winter weather can be hazardous, so you want to do everything you can to stay safe this winter. Make sure your car can handle the weather and the terrain you have to drive through.
