Whether you want a quiet dinner and a glass of Champagne at midnight, a stirring musical or theatrical performance, a crazy party, or fireworks across the Yarra, there is something for everyone this December 31st in Melbourne. The city is putting on two free events, every restaurant and bar will have a special evening planned and the city’s top performance spaces offer a wonderful programme of events. Deciding what to do will be the hardest part…
Head to Yarra Park, surrounding the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), for an evening of family fun. From 6pm there will be carnival rides, kid’s entertainment, activities and workshops, performers wandering around the grounds, and a host of big-name artists performing on the main stage. The festivities climax with a grand fireworks display at 9.15pm. Bring a picnic and make an evening of it in the warm Australian sunshine.
At the stroke of midnight a raft of fireworks will be set off from the top of Melbourne’s most iconic buildings, from the CBD all the way to the Docklands. The great thing about the city’s midnight firework display is that it can be seen from anywhere that has a clear view of the skyline. There are, however, a few recommended locations. Federation Square offers one of the best views in the city and is putting on a programme of live music performed by some of Australia’s hottest talent – think cool beats, reggae, funk and classic tracks. Alexandra Gardens and Birrarung Marr have a similarly good view and are offering a variety of performers who will rotate between locations.
A Bird’s Eye View at Eureka
You won’t get a much better view of the fireworks than from the top floor of the Eureka Tower. Make this New Year’s Eve one to remember by sipping a glass of Champagne whilst enjoying watching the display from the highest vantage point in the Southern Hemisphere. A ticket includes a range of canapes and grazing dishes served from hawker-style food stations, wine, beer and bubbly, mobile entertainment, and music provided by electro house and commercial DJs.
A cruise up the Yarra River, Champagne in hand, fireworks exploding overhead, makes for a very memorable New Year’s Eve. Several charter companies offer New Year’s Eve cruises, all departing from the Docklands, just downstream from Southbank and South Wharf, but all will time the cruise so that you are in the best location on the river to view either one or both of the fireworks displays. Expect drinks, some sort of food, pumping music, and a fantastic atmosphere.
