The psychology of color is certainly very real, though it is often not easy for us to identify it as an influence on our happiness, anxiety or discontent. When we stop and really think about it, it makes sense. For example, can you recall ever feeling anxious simply by looking at a certain color? If you can’t, take a look around you and really examine your environment the next time anxiety strikes and see if you can’t identify any triggers.
When we look at it from a scientific standpoint, it is proven that certain colors have a certain impact on our emotions. For example, yellow can make a person feel anxious while the color blue can elicit a calmer more relaxed feeling. Additionally, many people may associate the color red with the feeling of victory and dominance. It is known that the color red can definitely have a subtle but important influence on psychological functioning.
How is it that the psychology of color can create so many different emotions in us?
One reason is that our feelings about colors can be deeply rooted in our culture or personal experiences. Different countries and cultures can look at one and have many different interpretations of it. For example, in some Western countries, the color white can be associated with a sense of purity, while in many Eastern countries white is often associated with a sense of loss or a mourning period. Colors can definitely create a mental and emotional response in people from all walks of life. The psychology of color can affect how we respond to our surroundings. If our surroundings are filled with relaxing and calming colors, it will cause us to be more relaxed and less irritable.
Colors are not only used to influence our behavior and surroundings, but it is often used by marketing companies to advertise and sell their products effectively. Many of these marketing and advertising companies believe that there are great benefits to utilizing the psychological effects of colors this is why so many of these companies will spend hundreds of dollars on marketing advertisements that reflects various colors associated with the promotion of their products. These companies also feel that the powerful display of colors in their advertisements will capture the attention of their consumers and convince them to purchase their products.
Colors can also be associated with visualization. For example, while waiting on long lines in a supermarket, many consumers will browse through magazines that have bright color pictures filled with some sort of advertisement.
For all these reasons, it can be beneficial to keep these things in mind when you are picking a color scheme for different areas of your home. Going with a bright bold red in your room may symbolize passion and romance to you, but it may be harsh and difficult to relax in that room over time. Think about creating a peaceful feel with more muted colors. There may be other rooms, like a home office for example, that you want to create a more productive and energetic feeling in.
By keeping the psychology of color in mind when choosing anything from wall paint to living room furniture you will be able to control the over feel of your home and create a safe and relaxing haven to come home to each night.
