Is Your Energy Bill High? Lower It by Creating a More Sustainable Home and Community

Going green continues to gain in popularity. Some people do it to save money. Other people go green to save the world. The movement has captivated the nation from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. Cars, trucks, large appliances and building materials are increasingly being designed to conserve resources and reduce their impact on the environment. Individuals install replacement windows in New Jersey to decrease drafts and save on heating and cooling. Cities in the Garden State are fervently establishing codes and practices that create a greener, more sustainable community. This is a model that all states should emulate to help their region go as green as possible.

Sustainable Jersey Began in 2009

Sustainable Jersey grew out of a 2007 movement to form a Sustainable Communities Working Group. This group started with 150 New Jersey experts, leaders and organizations that included businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies. Numerous task forces were set up to monitor and endorse local greening and sustainable development. The Sustainable Jersey program took its current form after a year of intensive effort. The group advises and instructs New Jersey municipalities and communities on how they can create a greener lifestyle and save some money along the way.

Go Green with these Tips

The recommendations that the Sustainable Jersey group encourages go far deeper than merely installing replacement windows in New Jersey homes and office buildings. We should all be doing everything we can to reduce our carbon footprints, to lower our energy consumption and to make a contribution to a greener planet. Switching to a wood burning heater or another alternative heating source is one way to save money while greening the world. Many communities have a tax deduction if you buy an energy-efficient appliance. Even a little change like switching to LED or CFL lighting can have a major impact on your energy costs and the environment.

Eight Steps to Conserve Energy and Save Money

Here are a few more tips that will result in cash savings and a greener planet:

  • Use a smart power strip for your appliances. These devices recognize when the television or stereo is not in use. They cut off any power signal to the appliance to prevent phantom or vampire energy consumption.
  • Wash your clothing in cold water. Hang it outside to dry.
  • Reduce the length of your showers. Install low-flow showerheads. These two steps will conserve quite a bit of water and lower your water bill.
  • Add insulation to the attic, and place an insulation blanket over the water heater.
  • Plant some trees or shrubbery to prevent direct sunlight from entering your windows.
  • If you live close enough to your job, ride a bike, take the bus or walk to work. With gas prices as high as they are today, this will save you quite a bit of money.
  • When it’s time to upgrade your desktop computer, cell phone or laptop, find a recycling center or donate them to a charitable organization. If your local government doesn’t have one, recommend starting a recycling center.
  • Try making your own cleaning supplies. All it takes is ingredients you probably have around your house already, such as lemon juice, vinegar, baking soda and soap. Your homemade supplies will be non-toxic and effective. You’ll reduce packaging, preserve your indoor air quality and save money.
