Most of us can’t throw around money without thinking. Thankfully, many charities and shelters require other things besides money that are much easier to donate and still help a lot of people. If you’re the kind of person that feels called to help wherever you can, you might be able to do more than you realize. Rather than a simple cash donation, we’re going to show you some of the items that charities really need you to donate.
Video Overview
Clothing
Clothing of all kinds is a highly requested category at many homeless shelters and charities. You shouldn’t donate clothes in poor condition, but most clothing can be useful in one way or another. To make the biggest impact, consider donating items such as:
- New, unworn socks
- Lightly-worn shoes
- Winter jackets
- Unworn underclothing
- Hats, scarves, gloves, etc.
Donating clothing is easy! Places such as the Purple Heart Pickup association will come pick up your donations directly from your home if you can’t make it to a drop-off box.
Childcare Items
Far too many people are living on an unlivable income, many of which have their own families to take care of as well. Anything related to childcare is a welcome donation at most charities. Baby clothes are a good example, but don’t forget other things such as:
- Diapers
- Toys and games
- Non-perishable baby food
- Children’s books
Linens and Textiles
Things made from linen or cloth like blankets and bed sheets are a rare commodity among charities; they could really use these items. Imagine how many people one homeless shelter takes in on any given night and then think of how many beds they need to set up and make comfortable. These donations are the most useful during the colder parts of the year, but they won’t get turned away as long as they’re in working condition.
Hygiene Products
Of all the items that charities need you to donate, personal hygiene products are near the top of the list. Many of the items in your bathroom or medicine cabinet are luxuries that we rarely give a second thought to. Consider donating some of these items to help those in need stay healthy and clean:
- Toothpaste and brushes
- Tampons and pads
- Toilet paper
- Deodorant
- Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
- Bandages
