Have you ever wondered who the richest man in the world is? If you have, then you would probably say Bill Gates. Well, you would be wrong. Bill Gates ranks number two. The number one spot goes to mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helu. His net worth is about $73 billion.
Carlos Helu, born January 28, 1940 is a mexican businessman, investor, and philanthropist. Helu has been ranked by Forbes as not only the richest man, but richest person in the world since 2010. Helu was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1940 to parents Julián Slim Haddad and Linda Helu. Helu and his siblings were taught business practices by their father, and at the age of 12, Slim bought shares in a Mexican bank. Quite impressive for a 12 year old if you ask me.
At the age of 17, he earned 200 pesos a week working for his father’s company. His fortunes began from there. Helu acquired hotels, multiple business, and three different companies. On March 29, 2007, Slim surpassed Warren Buffet as the world’s second richest person. In 2008 Helu surpassed Bill Gates, making history and making his mark as the richest person in the world. Insane!
Slim was married to Soumaya Domit from 1967 until her death in 1999, and he has 6 children. I am sure none of them will have to work a day in their life if they don’t want to. Talk about the life!
I guess we will have to wait and see if anyone surpasses Helu, and until then, enjoy the number one spot!
