Cuba approves law allowing individuals to buy and sell homes
The Cuban government has passed a law allowing citizens and permanent residents to finally buy and sell houses. Fidel Castro banned the sale of houses by private citizens after he came into power in 1959. The new law takes effect on November 10th, and it follows legalisation made in October allowing the purchase and sale of cars by Cuban citizens. The passing of the new law means Cubans will be allowed to own a maximum of two homes, their main home and a holiday home. President Raul Castro has said the Soviet style system in Cuba is not working since he took over from his sick brother Fidel in 2008, but he has vowed that Cuba will remain a socialist state.
