How to Find A Gift Your Guy Will Absolutely Love!
Yeah, it’s back – Christmas.
Just when you thought it was safe, it is once again time to play that tricky game of finding the right gift for some very important people in your life. For me, this is one area where I really don’t want to disappoint the hard-working men in my life. I’m pretty lucky to have a father, a husband and a brother who are all worthy of some serious giftage, but the three of them could not be more different in their tastes and interests. I try to take this opportunity to pamper and spoil my guys with gifts they’ll love, and the holiday stress literally melts away.
Really, there is NO feeling like giving that perfect gift to someone you love. I mean, that what it all comes down to: giving someone special something special, and knowing you really touched them. Way easier said than done, I know. But guess what? I know exactly what guys want! Well, gift-wise anyhow.
Get personal, not sentimental.
Don’t cop-out with gift cards for the important men in your life. It’s lame. Think about it…your sending a man off to shop. You might as well tell him to sit through a day of Friends re-runs. He knows you mean well, but it’s more hassle for him than anything. You might also want to keep away from the overly-sentimental gifts, although well-meaning, such as those #1 Dad plaques and the whatnot. It’s cute for about 5 minutes, but honestly, what’s he going to do with it?
Guys can’t really appreciate sappy stuff they feel compelled to keep for years, collecting dust, just to protect your feelings. Just don’t go there. So, instead of going for the sentimental stuff, you need to get personal. Show that you truly know your man by honing your selection skills.

So here’s the thing. I actually figured out the secret to what EVERY guy wants for Christmas: something useful. Yup. That’s pretty much it. You can even get him something he technically already has, but take it up a level on the luxury-quotient. So, if your brother writes a blog about bar-be-cues you get him one of those astronaut pens and a plain-yet-stylish Moleskine notebook with a retro-looking BBQ emblazoned across the cover, so he can jot down all his genius new rib recipes. Useful, personal and yet splurgy (I know that’s not a word, but it should be).
The thing you need to do is focus on a passion your man has. It could be his career (but only if he LOVES it, otherwise you might be pouring salt on a wound), a hobby or something entertainment related. If it’s a sports-team, then search for something one-of-a-kind, retro, or limited edition. My brother really appreciates limited edition ball caps or soccer jerseys. They’re practical, since he actually wears them (like, all the time), and they’re special to him.

This year, my dad who loves to do construction and home renos like nobody’s business, is going to FLIP when he sees the Timberland Pro Series work boots I got him. They look good (my dad has style!) but they are very practical, so he gets to wear them for the work he loves for years to come. I also decided to get him some really well constructed work gloves, the kind he wouldn’t necessarily splurge on for himself. Pops, you better not be reading this and spoiling your surprise!
Plain and simple, men just want something they can and will use. Choose something they can use daily based on something they love, and hopefully they will think about you and how clever and practical you are every time they pick it up. See? Everybody wins!
