Police Shut Down Occupy Portland Protest Camp
On Sunday, mayor Sam Adams of Portland came down hard on protesters camping out with Occupy Portland using police in riot gear to forcibly remove and arrest anyone who stayed past the deadline. With a Sunday morning deadline to leave two fenced-off city centre parks looming over their heads, protesters defied the police and tried to stay in the park, but they were unsuccessful. Authorities have been cracking down on Occupy encampments because of repeated acts of violence and even a shooting incident at the Occupy Oakland camp. Police used loudspeakers to warn the Occupy Portland protesters that anyone who resisted orders to leave the parks and surrounding areas would be arrested and “may also be subject to chemical agents and impact weapons.” In all, 50 people were arrested for disobeying orders. Gina Ronning, an Occupy Portland protester, told The Oregonian Newspaper “The parks are gone, but the consciousness has not died. We have momentum, but we need to channel it.”
