Ten Bachelor Pad Mistakes to Avoid
If you are a bachelor, your home doesn’t have to be dark and dank. It doesn’t have to be dirty and cluttered. You can make your bachelor pad into a comfortable, stylish place to live –and to bring a date. Plus when you eventually sell your house it will no doubt make all the difference. All you have to do is avoid making a few common design mistakes.
Flags Are Not Curtains
You’re not in college is anymore. It’s time for you to put the flag back on the wall, the towels back in the bathroom and the sheets back in the linen closet. Head to the nearest store and buy some real curtains. If you don’t like curtains, go with blinds. They are cheaper and go with more colours. As an added bonus, they can be dusted instead of washed.
Reduce the Clutter
Don’t pack all of your stuff into a couple of rooms; spread your things throughout the house or apartment. It’s your bachelor pad, after all. You should own it. Be sure you make use of every room.
Colour It Up
Your dorm room days are behind you, and it’s time to put some colour on those white walls. If you’re a renter, don’t despair; you can probably get away with painting your walls as long as you’re willing to repaint them white when you leave. Pick complementary colours or, if you’re unsure of your ability, ask someone to help you choose.
Let There Be Light
Most bachelor pads suffer from chronic under-lighting. Don’t let this be the case at your pad; up the lumens by buying a couple of cheap lamps. Even if you don’t use them much yourself, they will be nice to have when company comes over.
Be Ready To Entertain
The couch may be a great place to eat pizza with the guys on game night, but it’s a bad place to eat during a dinner party (or a date). Buy some real dining room furniture, some actual dishes and some silverware, and you will be ready to make dinner for friends or your next date.
Buy Matching Furniture
Once again, you’re no longer in college. The packing crates, plywood bookshelves and garage sale odds-and-ends were fine when you were just starting out, but now that you’ve grown up it’s time to invest in some actual furniture. It doesn’t have to be expensive; just get some pieces that match.
Keep the Collectibles in Check
Yes, everyone knows you love your favourite team or sport. But there is no reason to cover your entire bachelor pad with your team’s colours and paraphernalia. Keep the collectibles to a minimum and you will have a lot more room in your home. You will also have less to stuff keep clean.
Get Rid of the Bird’s Nest
There’s no need for you to have an unsightly mess of dirty cables all over your pad, even if you have every gadget known to man. You can use twist ties and power strips to keep the cables in their proper places. You can also use furniture to hide them or tape them down if they are in a high-traffic area.
Patio Furniture Goes Outside
It does not count as real furniture when it is put in the dining room. Throw it out in the backyard where it belongs and get a real dining room table.
Price Does Not Equal Quality
Price also does not equal good design. Don’t assume that something will go well in your home just because it’s expensive. Look for items that are well made, will go well with your personal style and won’t leave you busted.
