Top Three Types of Weird Car Noises
Most car owners claim to know their fair share of info about car repairs. However, when it comes down to it, most of the boasters are just as likely to leave their car in the shop as anyone else. A true car owner, no matter how little they are technically inclined, should definitely know their own vehicle, the way it responds under various circumstances and to various factors and when it is truly time to investigate what’s going on under the hood. The number one source of concern for less experienced car owners is the weird sounds all cars eventually come to make. Knowing how to identify the most common noises also entails knowing when the time has come to fix said vehicle.
1. Braking noises
Most strange sounds coming from your car have something to do with braking. Professionals at car repairs shops will be able to place the source of the noise in an instant, and accurately identify the problem implied. If your car clunks as you brake, it might mean that one or several parts of the steering system have been worn out and need to be replaced. Alternatively, it might be that the disk brake caliper was not properly mounted, or that several brake hardware elements have been damaged or wholly removed. If, on the other hand, your brakes squeal, you might have dirt on the brake rotors, drums, pads or shoes. Perhaps the brake pads or shoes have been worn out, or have overheated and are now glazed. If the brakes continue to squeal after you’ve checked for all these, consider investigating the disc brake calipers: were they correctly mounted? Have they, perhaps, come loose?
2. Gear Shifting Noises
The fact that gear shifting causes strange noises is often a clear indicator that car repairs are in order. If you can hear the transmission grinding while shifting the gears, you might need to adjust the clutch. Alternatively, the clutch might have worn out and requires replacement. Investigate internal damage to the transmission and also make sure whether or not you need to adjust the shift linkage.
3. Engine Noises
Engine noises are the most worrisome for drivers. If your engine hesitates and a distinct popping sound can be heard coming from it, several possible explanations might be involved. It might be that the air filter has completely dried out. The sparks might not be in perfect working order either—they could be dirty, worn out or the spark wires might be damaged or simply wrongly connected. Check to see if you don’t have an ignition problem. Are you sure your fuel filter is not clogged? Verify all these, before you go doling out money on car repairs. You might simply have gotten a really rotten deal at the last fuel station you visited, since water mixed in with gasoline will most often cause the engine to make popping noises. If this is not the case, then perhaps your carburetor is fitted with a bad accelerator pump or features a bad power circuit.
