With over ten million people visiting London in 2012 a lot of them are going to be doing so on a budget, especially in today’s economic climate it is tough getting away let alone on a budget. London is one of the most expensive cities in the world so if you are planning on doing any tours and are on a budget then you may find the following bits of information useful.
Purchase an oyster card
Any travel you do around London will probably involve you needing to take a bus or the tube, if you buy tickets on the day as you travel the cost of this will mount up. So we recommend purchasing an Oyster Card at the beginning of your trip as this will save you money on standard fares.
Check out the Hop On Hop Off London Bus Tours available.
The big double decker open top buses that you will see going around London are a great way to see the city and get about, you can purchase a 24 hour ticket that allows you to jump on and off as and when you please. There is also an audio guide on the route to tell you where you are and the history of the places you see. This is a very popular way for people to see London and also comes with a free river cruise – not bad for about £25 for an adult.
Always purchase things with cash!
This cannot be emphasised enough, if you use your foreign card then you will get a poor exchange rate and also will probably pay for commission charges and you don’t want that. But please be vigilant in London when handling large amounts of cash, there are people out there who will want to relieve you of your cash. So only take out what you think you will need for that day and the rest keep in the safe in your hotel room.
