Spread the love

Charity Plan UK has been fighting for the rights of young girls for the past 75 years and it seems now they have finally been heard. After an extensive campaign by Plan UK October 11th has been designated by the United Nations as International Day of the Girl.
International Day of the Girl aims to highlight, celebrate and address the issues young girls around the world face – particularly early forced marriage. Girls, event some as young as 5 are forced into marriage and one in seven is married off before they reach the age of 15 – this is simply wrong.
Because I am a Girl
Plan UK’s ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign has and will continue to support millions of girls around the world. Plan works with these young individuals and their communities to give them back their independence and offer them choices in life that may have been taken away due to the pressures felt by their families and communities. They need to be given the freedom and support to make their own decisions on education, careers, who they choose to marry and when they have children. This cycle needs to be broken.
One in three girls around the world is denied education due to the pressures of their society, poverty and discrimination. Along with this every 3 seconds a girl is forced or coerced into marriage. These numbers are shocking.
