Honey has been used for centuries as food and medicine, and for good reason. This natural sweetener isn’t just a delicious addition to tea or toast; it’s packed with nutrients and health-boosting properties that can benefit your body in many ways. From its rich antioxidant content to its ability to promote better digestion, honey offers a range of advantages that make it worth incorporating into your diet. Continue reading to discover the health benefits of adding honey to your daily diet.

Rich in Antioxidants

One of the standout benefits of honey is its high level of antioxidants. These compounds help combat free radicals in your body, reducing oxidative stress and supporting overall health. Some honey varieties, such as dark and raw honey, are especially rich in beneficial plant compounds like flavonoids and phenolic acids, which can reduce the risks of chronic diseases.

Natural Energy Source

Looking for a quick energy boost without turning to processed snacks? Honey is a natural source of simple sugars like glucose and fructose, which your body can easily absorb. These sugars provide an instant, clean energy boost, making honey a great option for pre-workout fuel or an afternoon pick-me-up. Unlike refined sugars, honey also offers trace amounts of vitamins and minerals, making it a smarter alternative.

Soothes Coughs and Sore Throats

A spoonful of honey can work wonders when you’re dealing with a cough or sore throat. Honey is as effective as some over-the-counter cough suppressants in providing relief. The thick consistency soothes irritated throat tissues, while its natural antimicrobial properties help fight infections. Use raw and organic honey for best results since processed varieties may lose some of these healing benefits.

Promotes Better Sleep

If you’re having trouble unwinding at night, honey could help you get a more restful night’s sleep. Consuming honey before bed supports the release of melatonin, a hormone that plays a key role in regulating your sleep-wake cycle. A small dose of honey can also help replenish the liver’s glycogen stores, preventing nighttime disruptions and contributing to deeper, uninterrupted sleep.

Supports Digestive Health

Honey is a natural prebiotic, meaning it helps nourish the good bacteria in your gut. A healthy gut microbiome promotes better digestion, nutrient absorption, and a robust immune system. Additionally, honey can soothe gastrointestinal issues such as indigestion and upset stomach. Raw and organic honey, in particular, retains these beneficial properties better than heavily processed varieties.

May Improve Heart Health

One of the health benefits of adding honey to your daily diet is heart health. Some studies suggest that honey can help lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol. It’s also thought to reduce triglycerides and improve blood flow, supporting heart health. Antioxidants in honey, particularly raw honey, may reduce inflammation, another factor in maintaining a strong cardiovascular system.

From improving sleep to supporting heart health, honey is a true superfood with impressive benefits. Incorporating it into your daily routine is easy; drizzle it over yogurt, stir it into your tea, or enjoy it straight from the spoon. Make sure you’re getting the honey you want because raw and organic honey are different. Explore all the honey types in your area and enjoy them with meals and snacks today.

It’s no secret that getting kids excited about physical education can be a challenge. Teachers have their work cut out for them, trying to keep students engaged and active during gym class. Luckily, you can make gym class fun for elementary students by balancing physical activity and enjoyment. Below, you’ll find valuable insights into making gym class a favorite part of the school day for your young students.

Incorporate Fun Props and Toys

Everyone knows children love playing with toys, so why not incorporate fun props and toys into your gym class? Adding these elements to traditional games or activities provides an entirely new level of excitement.

There are many wonderful uses for pool noodles in gym class. For example, you can turn them into obstacle courses or relay race tools or even use them for playing tag. Including bright, colorful, and interactive toy elements heightens the fun factor and keeps students engaged.

Creative Games and Activities

Children love trying new things, so experimenting with different games and activities can keep them interested in gym class. Look for games that are age-appropriate and allow for a variety of skill levels.

Parachute Games

These are a classic gym class staple, with endless possibilities for games and activities.

Circuit Courses

Set up stations with various exercises and challenges to keep your students moving throughout the class.

Team-Building Games

Encourage cooperation and teamwork with activities such as “Capture the Flag” or “Sharks and Minnows.”

Elevate the Mood With Music

Adding music to your gym class can instantly elevate the mood and motivate students to move around more. Create a playlist with popular songs your students enjoy, and incorporate activities encouraging dancing or moving to the beat. You can use music for activities as simple as running laps, or you can use it to create an easy-to-follow group dance.

Encourage Friendly Competition

Incorporating friendly competition into gym classes can make things even more exciting for students. Games and activities that foster teamwork, strategy, and collaboration can help your students feel more connected to the class and each other. Be sure to keep the competition level age-appropriate, focusing on the fun aspect rather than solely on winning.

Physical education is a crucial part of a well-rounded learning experience and lays the foundation for a healthy lifestyle. Knowing how to make gym class fun for elementary students goes a long way in ensuring that students develop a lifelong love of physical activity. By implementing these strategies, gym class will become a much-anticipated event for your students!

In the hectic world of grown-up life, finding fun and engaging activities to help you relax and connect with friends and family is important. One often-overlooked activity is mini golf. Playful and engaging, it provides countless benefits that go beyond the green. Here are a few benefits of playing mini golf as an adult that improve your well-being and social life.

Enhance Cognitive Skills & Problem-Solving Abilities

As an adult, it’s crucial to keep your cognitive skills sharp. Research shows that playing mini-golf is an excellent way to enhance problem-solving and logical thinking capabilities. Each hole requires a unique approach, so this entertaining pastime demands precision and significant mental gymnastics. You’ll flex those cognitive muscles as you brainstorm angles and assess the best path on each course.

Foster Social Connections & Strengthen Relationships

Mini golf is an ideal group activity, as it invites friendly competition and promotes laughter and conversation. It’s easily accessible for people of all ages, and its laid-back atmosphere makes it a perfect ice-breaker for new connections. Encourage camaraderie and create lasting memories by organizing a mini golf outing for your friends, coworkers, or family.

Furthermore, the game’s calming nature serves as a mood booster and an effective way of decompressing from daily stresses. A leisurely round of mini golf helps regulate cortisol levels, increase endorphins, and improve overall mental well-being.

The Power of Saint-Johns Wort

Please note that the following SJW tips are not medical advice. Ask your doctor before using herbs like Saint-Johns wort as medicine.

Saint-Johns Wort; An Unsuspecting Herb

Saint-Johns wort (also known as SJW ) is an unsuspecting plant. One might even call it a weed! With its spindly stems and tiny yellow flowers, what could it possibly have to offer?

Saint-Johns wort is a perennial, which means that it lives more than two years. Even in the coldest of states, SJW tends to come back in the spring.

Saint-Johns Wort Uses

This plant has been used since the time of the ancient Greeks! So let’s look at its uses.

It was used in the past as a poultice, for lung problems, and for sleeplessness. But today, we tend to use it to regulate moods. Saint-Johns Wort has been proven to be more effective than placebos, in various mood studies. It can be used to ease anxiety and depression. While it isn’t approved by the FDA for such ailments, it is often prescribed in countries in Western Europe, like Germany, in place of pills.

Video Overview

SJW can be taken in many ways; as a tincture oil, a tea, or as an herbal supplement cap. The options are near-endless!

Potential Side Effects of SJW

What an odd little plant this is- It can make you sensitive to the sun if you take it in high doses! If this starts to happen, either get out your sun hat or take less. Other unwanted side effects this herb may cause are dizziness, headache, and insomnia.

And, if you take other medicines, Saint-Johns wort might not be of best interest to you. It can render important medications, like blood thinners birth control, useless!

Not everyone experiences side effects from Saint John’s Wort though; many people use it and only experience its benefits! Ask your doctor about this herb especially before beginning treatment.

Growing it Vs. Buying it

Saint-Johns wort isn’t the easiest herb to grow. It’s slow and needs the perfect amount of medium sunlight. When you give it too much sun, the leaves will scorch. When you give it too little, and it won’t flourish either. In addition to this, it needs frequent transplanting and fertile soil. The seeds can even take months before you see sprouts! So why grow SJW instead of buying it?

Well. You might not be actually getting potent herbs when it comes to essential oils if you buy them from the store. Who knows how long they’ve sat around in plastic bottles! Pro tip: Use glass bottles to store your herbs. They last longer, and remain more fragrant.

In addition, you don’t actually know that what is inside is really SJW. That’s right. Herbal supplements aren’t monitored very well, to begin with. There aren’t really any rules that prevent companies from adding say, 50% grass clippings to your Saint-Johns Wort mix. Yummy. In short, if you’re buying SJW from a company, be sure to do your research first.

This week, MRI Performance and Prolab are celebrating National Women’s Health Week, which runs from May 12 – 18. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is conducting a weeklong observance to promote women’s health.

Women around the country are being encouraged to:

Receive regular checkups and preventive screenings

Get active

Eat healthy

Get enough sleep and manage stress

Avoid unhealthy behaviors

On May 10, the White House issued a proclamation to celebrate National Women’s Health Week: “Since our Nation’s founding, women have given their all to expanding opportunity for their families and for future generations. Decade after decade, that fierce dedication has been rewarded with remarkable progress in nearly every part of society . . . . This week, as we reflect on how far we have come in the fight to provide Americans with the care they deserve, let us renew our commitment to empowering all women with the chance to live strong, healthy lives.”

Prolab provides sports nutrition products to professional bodybuilders, athletes and fitness enthusiasts. One of the company’s sponsored athletes is crossfit competitor Jessica Clay of Ohio, who has been a bodybuilder for the past 12 years.

“Last year I decided to devote my attention to crossfit rather than trying to do pro bikini at the same time,” said Clay, who runs a marketing agency when she’s not at the gym. This week, Clay is competing to qualify for the 2013 CrossFit Games in California later this year.

To help prepare for the regional competition, she favors a combination of Prolab’s Cuts II Gold, Pure Whey Protein, Beta Alanine, and Quick Fire.

Asked what keeps her motivated, Clay says “I know no other way . . . motivation I suppose just comes natural.” Many women, including working professionals, struggle to find the time to remain active and improve their fitness. Clay provides an inspiring quote from basketball legend Michael Jordan: “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”

MRI’s Emily Nicholson is another sponsored athlete who has competed in the figure and fitness scene since 2005. The Chicago native turned IFBB pro in 2009 and is pursuing her goal of making it to the Olympia stage.

The 38-year-old isn’t your typical bodybuilder. In addition to being a certified personal trainer and sports nutritionist, Nicholson has both a law and master’s degree in taxation.

Rachelle Jorgensen exemplifies a woman’s potential to juggle work responsibilities with health and fitness. The 41-year-old is a wife, mother of three kids, and a grandmother of one. On top of that Jorgensen owns an interior design company.

In 2009, Jorgensen competed in her first Ironman competition and won. What keeps her going despite all her responsibilities? Jorgensen prefers Prolab’s Whey Isolate to push her through lengthy and difficult workouts.

The supplement is designed to be an “ultra pure, rapidly absorbed premium grade protein to support lean muscle growth and help improve recovery time from intense training”. As communities across the country celebrate Women’s Health Week, inspiring athletes remind the rest of us that a fitness lifestyle helps us to be physically active, eat healthy, manage stress, and avoid unhealthy behaviors.

MRI and Prolab are part of the Natrol family of brands, providing nutrition and supplement products for women of all shapes, sizes, lifestyles and ages. Some of the company’s products include B-12, Melatonin, 5-HTP, Biotin, Carb Intercept Phase 2, Laci Le Beau Super Dieter’s Tea, and NuHair FOAM.

Respondents also believed that they would be in a better position to improve their health if they had better and frequent interaction with their medical records. In their April white paper, the authors of the study said that record-sharing “is likely to change providers’ work, necessitating new types of skills to communicate and partner with patients.”

Here are other findings from the report regarding online access to medical records:

Was a valuable supplement to visits with their doctors, allowing them to remember what was discussed and avoid unnecessary phone calls

Prepared them for office visits and enabled them to ask more intelligent questions

Enabled them to show their VA records to local non-VA physicians

Increased their knowledge of their health and encouraged them to do more self care

Gave them more insight into their doctor’s thinking

Served as a starting point for Internet research related to their health

Made them prompt their doctors about care they needed but weren’t receiving.

Additionally, there were negative reactions to easier access. Some saw their stress levels increase when they read detailed medical findings. However, increased stress levels are not confined to electronic viewings as the same reaction can occur when medical personnel deliver paper-based reports. After viewing the electronic filings, some patients became aware that their doctors weren’t being completely honest with them in face-to-face discussions.
The study found that a few doctors were more truthful when they filed electronic reports. Some patients discovered inconsistencies between the online notes and what doctors said during visits.
The authors said, “In all focus groups, participants put knowledge from their records to use by learning more about their health issues, gaining more knowledge about their providers’ views, and advocating for themselves in discussions about their care.”

The evolving preference of medical consumers could spur a new wave of innovation in the area of secure electronic communication. A few start-ups in Silicon Valley are experimenting with ways to deliver healthcare records via secure online websites. Earlier this month, Rock Health published a study which discovered that medical technology ventures saw a 35 percent increase in funding investments over the same period in 2012.
The two most popular innovations attracting financiers are remote patient monitoring and hospital administration. Thus, investors, hedge funds, venture capitalists, and private equity firms are betting that digitization – as a means for lowering costs and improving efficiency – will be the wave of the future in healthcare.
Interestingly, a major stumbling block to efficient access has been Internet users’ distrust of username and password systems for fear of malware, phishing scams, lost records, and identity theft.
According to an April study by the Ponemon Institute, 46 percent of Americans don’t trust systems that rely solely on user names and passwords for access. Similarly, 38 percent don’t trust sites unless they require frequent password resets. Some industry analysts believe that with emerging technologies, those percentages should increase. Voice recognition was the overwhelming choice of authentication with 83 percent followed by facial recognition with 70 percent.
There could be a different dynamic between large hospitals and smaller medical practices. Digitization will also not be appropriate without highly secure authentication. Care providers such as 24hrcares.com would be hard-pressed to post diagnosis by their medical staff online. Personal interaction may still be appropriate for most situations. However, administrative functions – like billing and scheduling for future appointments – could gain from online access.
Will healthcare go paperless? The United States has the highest medical costs of any country in the world. Paperless makes a hospital visit cheaper and more efficient.

The findings are expected to encourage national rehab centers such as Residential Treatment and major hospitals to offer online psychiatric services.

In the study, 53 female respondents indicated they would turn to online interventions if offered by professional medical personnel. The new moms indicated that the services should also be made available anonymously due to privacy and data security concerns. Case Western’s School of Nursing and College of Arts and Sciences is publishing its findings in the new issue of Archives of Psychiatric Nursing. The women also preferred learning strategies to cope, information about depression, and blogging interactions with a health professional.

In response to its findings, Case Western’s nursing school will roll out a website and online portal for interventions to address the need.

New mothers often undergo postpartum depression after experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. It affects about 7 to 15 percent of new moms. “Mothers cannot always find a sitter and then spend time driving to and from counseling,” said Judith Maloni, the lead researcher. “An online intervention is available when the moms have time.”

The women cited convenience and access as one of the main advantages of Internet-based therapy. The psychiatric industry and major rehabilitation centers have long resisted efforts to move counseling to web-based portals. Many argue that electronic communication poses privacy concerns for both providers and patients, and mistakes could lead to costly litigation and destruction of credibility. Traditionalists have also been concerned about the security of data transmitted online. Some argue that if hackers can compromise the firewalls of financial institutions, they can also intrude on the private health records of patients.

Del Songo Painting [ Credit: Commons/Flickr ]

A cynical and monetary-based interpretation of the lack of change concludes that Internet-based counseling will lead to lower chargeable rates for licensed psychiatrists and (debt-ridden) therapists straight out of grad school. Under this theory, rates could come down from $100 to $200 an hour per session, to say, $75 an hour per session. Web-based counseling services in the United States could also come under threat from offshore Internet medical providers from Asian health hubs such as Thailand, Singapore, and China.

Earlier this week, the American College of Physicians (ACP) submitted recommendations urging its network of 133,000 doctors and medical personnel to avoid social media, email, and other Internet-based communication with patients. The guidance was published in the April 16 issue of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. “The creation and use of information online and the widespread use of the Internet offer exciting new opportunities for patient care, but also require physicians to consider how to best protect patient interests and apply principles of professionalism to online settings,” ACP said in a statement.

However, technology advocates believe that advanced tools such as electronic communication and software apps should play a role in modern treatments. A University of Wisconsin study found that 44 percent of senior citizens between the ages of 60 and 90 use social communities because of their friendliness. This demographic may be especially lonely in their retirement homes and hospice communities.

That plays into the primary strength of Internet chat and social networks. Such communities may reduce, or treat, mental illnesses and postpartum depression found in new mothers. “Older adults can use social media to access health-related information and engage in patient-to-patient-doctor conversations,” said Dr. Anja Leist. “There are many online forums where people in difficult life situations, such as informal caregivers of a spouse with dementia or individuals with depression, can exchange thoughts as well as receive and provide social support. Other positive consequences are that lonely adults can overcome loneliness through contact to family and friends and other users with similar interest.”

It may currently be a stretch to propose that social media can cure depression. However, studies show that many women are open to receiving therapy through Internet portals. Such an approach may not only be more convenient and efficient, it will likely save them money as well.

If there is an irony to all this, it’s that Internet addiction could soon be treated online.

Many things can keep women from enjoying sexual activities. They include diminished or lost sexual desire; the inability to become sexually aroused; difficulty achieving orgasm or sexual climax; and painful intercourse.

Occasional sexual problems are common and happen to most women from time to time. Persistent sexual problems and those that cause emotional distress require professional intervention. They generally signify a condition known as female sexual dysfunction (FSD).

Video Overview

What Causes Female Sexual Dysfunction?

Most female sexual problems have a physical or psychological origin. Physical causes include medical conditions like type 2 diabetes, hormone fluctuations, heart disease or nerve disorders. Some antidepressants and other medications also affect sexual desire and performance.

The common psychological causes of female sexual dysfunction include depression, anxiety and job-related stress. Marriage or relationship problems also play a role in sexual function. Some women experience sexual problems due to past sexual traumas.

What Defines Female Sexual Dysfunction?

The success of Viagra in treating male impotence or erectile dysfunction paved the way for a new disease category: female sexual dysfunction. Doctors use seven sexual problems to define FSD. The problems must cause women distress before they qualify as FSD disorders.
According to the “Journal of Urology,” female sexual dysfunction includes hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), sexual aversion disorder, sexual arousal disorder, orgasmic disorder, painful intercourse or dyspareunia, vaginal spasms or vaginismus and non-coital sexual pain.

Although menopausal women are most likely to experience sexual problems due to age-related issues and hormone problems, FSD can affect women of all ages and in all stages of life. It can also cause emotional distress for their husbands or sexual partners. Female sexual dysfunction can have a detrimental effect on marriage and relationships. Women who experience persistent sexual problems should seek medical or professional help.

How is Female Sexual Dysfunction Treated?

Female sexual dysfunction has many different treatments depending on the cause and type of sexual problem involved. Low libido is typically treated with medications, hormones or counseling. Healthy lifestyle changes are also encouraged to improve sexual desire and enhance intercourse.

Orgasm problems, known medically as anorgasmia, are usually treated with lifestyle changes, counseling and sex therapy. Hormone therapies such as estrogen or testosterone replacement cannot cure anorgasmia, but they can help.

Painful intercourse often responds to medication, although counseling and sex therapy are also recommended. Lubricants, warm baths and changes to the sexual routine may alleviate pain during sex.

Sexual problems are real for millions of women, but they are rarely simple matters. Men can treat erection problems with a little blue pill, but female sexual problems usually require a comprehensive treatment approach. Sexual desire, pleasure and distress are complex issues for women since they involve physical and emotional factors.
Women who are dissatisfied with their sexual lives should have an honest discussion with their partners before seeking professional help. Medical treatments and sex therapy can reverse most sexual problems, and improved sexual health greatly enhances quality of life.

A study performed by the University of Chicago has found that 43 percent of women suffer from some form of sexual dysfunction with 27 percent going so far as to report that their sexual encounters are devoid of pleasure. In addition, a 2003 survey from UCLA’s Departments of Urology and Psychiatry found that roughly 40 percent of women with these problems refused to seek help for it.

If sexual dysfunction remains unaddressed, it can eventually lead to depression, self-esteem issues, undue stress and especially relationship problems. In order to regain a normal life and an improved level of happiness, taking steps to remedy the problem is key.

Video Overview

What is it Caused By?

Sexual disorders have a wide range of causes that can be due to physical, lifestyle and external factors. It can be caused by many medications, particularly antidepressants, antipsychotics, hormonal contraceptives, anxiolytics, corticosteroids and opioid painkillers. Other common causes include unhealthily high or low weight, diabetes, blood pressure issues, stress, malnutrition and many lifestyle habits.

Many women who are faced with the difficult problem of a low libido can usually benefit from some form of female sexual enhancement. Some go to their doctor and receive hormone pills and injections that may only compound the problem or cause dangerous, unbearable side effects. There are a variety of ways to enhance sexual function naturally.
Weight-Bearing Exercise

A lack of exercise is the bane of sexual desire. However, doing too much cardiovascular exercise can also cause this problem by overloading the body with cortisol, the stress hormone. A woman who wants to enhance her sexual function is advised to perform a greater proportion of weight-bearing exercise. This causes large increases in testosterone that will aid desire and sensitivity.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal, particularly from steel-cut or Irish oats, has chemical compounds that help to boost testosterone. These substances also inhibit the effectiveness of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), a hormone that traps your body’s sex hormones and makes them useless. With less SHBG, you’re free to enjoy more and better sex.

L-Lysine

Lysine is an essential amino acid that, in foods, comes from meat and other animal products. However, you can also find it as a nutritional supplement. This protein building block is important for your body’s ability to produce sex hormones, particularly androgens like testosterone, which provide the greatest benefits to sexual function.

Zinc

Zinc, a mineral found in many common foods, is also used by the body to produce hormones. If a woman is zinc-deficient, as most people are known to be, then sexual desire and sensitivity can suffer. Like lysine, you can find this mineral in a supplement form for easier use.

Eat More Fat

Most popular diet models today stress the importance of avoiding fat, often to an obsessive degree. It’s no consequence that the rates of sexual dysfunction among both genders have also been on the rise. The body requires fat consumption, particularly of the supposedly “bad” ones like saturated fats, to carry out numerous important functions. One of these is hormone production. If your diet lacks fat and you’re experiencing sexual difficulties, consider adding more of it to your diet to promote female sexual enhancement.
